Life in Afghan *Pictures added*
Hey all,

3 weeks have gone by and what a 3 weeks it has been. Other than missing all the good banter on here I miss not sweating, cold beer, junk food and most of all my Ute. Anyhow, I have have some spare time so I thought I would share with you some of the things I have been getting up to out here:

First 10 days was full of training on both weapons/ tactics along with the whole 'hearts and minds' concept.

Since then it has been a challenge to get into the swing of things as there is nothing to take over as we are part of a new initiative out here. I have a fleet of robots, remote weapon systems and camera systems to take care of and to try and educate the Engineers in looking after them so they don't let them down when lives are at risk.

This week, after unsuccesfully trying to get a stud made up in UK I went on a mission to find some steel, a lathe and someone to operate it........2 out of 3 wasn't bad and I ended up rekindeling my skills on the machine and a few hours later I had what I wanted Thumbs Up

Today was more exciting as we (Fiter section) went up to the helicopter pad to have a walk through talk through on the AH64 Apache gunship....which is AWESOME. Whilst there we got to see all sorts happen from other AH64s comming in and out of Ops to Chinooks, Linxs, Merlins, Super Stallions and other helicopters coming in to touch down a matter of meters away.

Well, that is about it for now, I am sure more will come along thick and fast in the next few months to come. Hopefully sme of you might have found this interesting and you have enjoyed some of the pictures. Also there are a lo of negative things that have happened too, as you all probably see it on the news......but unfortunatly it really is just the tip of the iceberg.

Great pics Glyn - keep them coming!

Guessing REME or RE? Not sure who else would know what a lathe was....!

Reading a great book at the mo called 'In Foreign Fields' - firsthand accounts of the contacts that lead to decorations in Iraq and Afghanistan. First one I read was by a chap I was at RMAS with who won the MC. Very sobering - make sure you all come home safe and sound...... My blog - www.anacreinhampshire.blogspot.co.uk

Glyn,

Get a trip down to Kandahar, all the junk food you can stuff....Pizza Hut, Timmy Hortons, Burger King, Dutch Cafe (do a fantastic all-day breakfast), believe they're opening a TGI's too! I came back a stone and a half heavier after four months (mind you I didn't go to the gym once!) went to the sweet counter instead! Laughing

Take care Matey!

Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Pretty much spot on Si, I am REME attached to RE (someone has to). I am still not too sure what I will be doing over the next 6 months (other than fixing things) as we are part of a new initiative more which I am sure you will see all over the news in coming months (keep your ears open for 'Op Talisman').

It has been a rough week out here for the guys on the ground and we are hearing that things are going to get hairy over the next few months Sad Oh well, better keep my body armour at the ready.

Back in the thick of things!!

Been back almost 2 weeks after R&R, and things are on full tilt. The wagons are constantly in and out of camp clearing routes for the main convoys and doing an awesome job of it as none of the main convoy wacons have been hit by IEDs since we started....RPG and small arms are still far too common though.

We are now getting super friendly with the septics who are supplying us with rollers (for a price) which are doing their job just fine:

That's how I roll

Unfortunately we had a bad week last week with several of our own wagons getting hit by huge IEDs...but thanks to the vehicles we have no-one was hurt in any way....barely shook up even. Here is one of the serch vehicles.... they take on average 24 hours to have them back on the road clearing routes again Smile

Other than that things are just normal daily routine, and I am now already looking forward to September when it is home coming time Very Happy
