Q Plate Question

Hello all!

Just a quick question, if you were to build a new defender onto a new chassis, using all defender body panels and parts, but say completely different engine and running gear ie uprated axles, air brakes etc, would that effect its max towing certification or is that set by something else? and would it effect its max loading?

I assume it is always going to be easier to get an existing one and just modify it and have it as modified on insurance, but if you fancied a challenge?

Not planning on moving the earth or anything just thinking it through as a technical exercise in what if?

if I remember correctly a 300tdi 110 csw can tow up to 6 tonnes with a landrover fitted linked brake system 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

It's been a few years since I was embroiled in all things SVA/IVA so some of this has probably changed but...

If all parts are new then you don't get a Q plate, you can get an appropriate new vehicle plate. Not 100% on current rules but you were allowed a number of reconditioned items as well. Some of the Ibex were built this way and used recon axles and engines and were given new registrations (51 and 52 plates which shows it's a while ago).

As a "Q" plate it's up to you to determine what the GVW, max train weight etc... is when you put it through the SVA/IVA test. Which category of vehicle and GVW you choose it to be will also determine the type of test it will need to go through so you need to check that the figures you put down aren't going to give you a headache at the test or when you come to tax it, test it or drive it on the road. (Needing an HGV license to drive it, for example, if you put it down as over 3500Kg GVW !)

Bear in mind though that the values you choose can effect all sorts of things, particularly if a tacho will need to be fitted, what type of MOT test it will need, if you need an operators license and so on. Sticking to the 3000 GVW (ish) and 3500 max towing weight slots the vehicle into the most convenient of these categories for normal use. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

I think it's 4 tons, not 6. Most (but not all) Landrovers from SI on have been rated at 4 tons GTW with coupled brakes and an appropriate (not ball) coupling.
