I had one on my old tdi
problems I had : oil pump drive broke after couple of days would not engage (got replacement complete unit ) reason I found it broke was the spline was tight when fitted and it forced shaft back in to unit and put force on the oil pump drive ( got what looks like a small con rod inside back cover ) took back cover off to check . speed sensor depth adjustment got to be just right used to push oil out of breather though the valve on end of breather pipe ( only really after long run ) fixed by fitting a canister made out of metal inline filter ( cut filter open took filter out and welded back up ) in the pipe below valve so it collected oil when it got hot and when the overdrive cooled it would suck oil back into unit ( worked a treat ) wire broke on gear lever up to switch also had bearing going after not many miles Last edited by munch90 on 4th Jan 2014 6:55pm. Thanks There's an electrical fault somewhere as if you have the I'd switched on as you turn the ignition on the light should flash not just come in for a second as usual. I doubt it'd be oil pump as its been fitted all those months with no issues. My speed sensor is the new type which is preset. And if that wasn't reading correctly it should flashy as if I'm going too slow. Anyone else had this??

be honest cant remember what the light did , remember one on the switch but that's about it ,It was few years ago
got mine I think when they first came on market but once I sorted the problems it was good |

Yeah that's the light. I've been really happy with it. Would never go back makes it such a better vehicle. Still got all my gears for pulling yet I can cruise at 80 in a defender?? Is the usual response

I fitted mine after doing some engine work ( supersized intercooler made and non standard turbo made to my spec ) and found I needed more gears

i had one, fitted it from new, did 89k ish IIRC miles in it trouble free on a remapped td5. i say trouble free i did have the the oil out of the breather issue early on, but that only last 500miles.

Milsy,
My best suggestion is to give Martin at Devon 4x4 a call on Monday morning. He is an overdrive specialist and rebuilds them regularly. Tell him your problem and he will probably be able to diagnose it for you. Also, just for information, Devon 4x4 bought all of the spares for the GKN overdrives when GKN stopped making them, so probably they have everything that you need. Martin was my next port of call though I have a long trip to work Monday morning with no overdrive was hoping I could have my 6th gear back for then. Will have another look tomorrow

Hi,
If its only you that drives the car then I would bn the ecu and apply 12V direct to the solenoid using a relay and control it manually, Dave Dave |

In tempted to just fit a switch but its only a simple circuit so can't be complex to sort

Don't know if you saw the thread which I started about my non-functioning (now fixed) GKN?
