Me and the Mrs are heading to Pitlochry in Jan. Apart from Distilleries, and walking are there any other interesting attractions to go see ? 1999 Defender TD5 110

The Pitlochry Festival Theatre is worth a visit if that's your sort of thing.

Drive to Kinloch Rannoch and beyond to Rannoch railway station on the edge of Rannoch Moor where you can catch the train to Fort William and beyond to Malaig. Also handy for a combined walk and train trip back if you can get your timings right.

Schiehallion close by Kinloch Rannoch is handy if you feel the need to bag a Munro.

Menzies castle, near Dull (yes, really) is worth a tour as are the Crannogs (ancient dwellings on stilts in the water) at Loch Tay.

Have a good trip.

Rob

p.s. Want to buy a timeshare (an inheritance I would like to dispose of) in a house right on the shore of Loch Rannoch?

Your gona drive right past Dunkeld , it's the home of LR experience . Park in the Hilton Dunkeld and have a lunch right on the banks of the Tay , it's in the off road course grounds and you can watch the vehicles goin round . The Hermitage is 5 min away and amazing walk with Scotland's tallest trees , salmon jumping the falls and mind blowin scenery . 20 min onwards is the famous House of Bruar , a must do stop for you . You will find defender cards , plates , mugs , sweaters and more in there . 30 min onwards is Aviemore , make sure you go up the Funicular railway . Watch the skiing , amazing views and hava coffee at the top of the Cairngorms .
I should work for the tourist board eh !
And don't forget your Scottish pounds and passport at Gretna . Thumbs Up

There's another great hill which you can walk to from Pitlochry... Ben Vrackie:

Loads of good ideas from Keith & Defender4 Thumbs Up

* There's some fantastic Mountain Biking in the area (an MTB Enduro race was held at Dunkeld last year), but there's good trails for all abilities. Some MTB routes here:
http://www.perthshire.co.uk/documents/Cycle%20Pitlochry.pdf

* House of Bruar (Keith's suggestion) do an awesome, good-value, steak pie at lunchtime.

* Moulin Hotel ( http://www.moulininn.co.uk/ ) does local hand-pulled beers, including brewing their own...

* Perth has a decent LR dealership, but Macrae & Dick (Inverness) is better

* Tiso's (Inveralmond roundabout, North end of the Perth bypass) have a cafe with excellent latte & broken-biscuit cake - Postcode PH1 3EE for your satnav Wink A regular pitstop on our commute between Edinburgh and Aviemore

* If you're feeling adventurous, the River Tay at Grandtully has a good white water rafting venue (and kayaks too). http://www.naelimits.co.uk/river-tay.cfm

* Blair Castle http://www.blair-castle.co.uk/ - they also do Land Rover safaris

* and another LR safari company nearby http://highlandsafaris.net/leisure/our-safaris/mountain-safari
Safari video here (looks good fun, and good pics of the area)

Loads to do - I am sure you'll enjoy it Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

A Munro ?

Timeshare sounds tempting would rather it be a whole building. Some thing we are thinking of in a few years is to up sticks and move to Scotland. Not sure where, but we have ruled out the middle of the Highlands. 1999 Defender TD5 110

The only addition I can think of to those already suggested is the Fortingal yew, not too far from Pitlochry, variously suggested to be the oldest tree in Britain or even Europe. Aberfeldy and Kenmore are both quite scenic on the way. Dirty Deeds - Done Dirt Cheap

I'm glad we chose Aviemore...because it's got plenty of facilities (pubs, restaurants, shops, sports centre etc) without driving, and it's on a rail link. The rail link has been perfect for Hogmanay visitors, especially the older ones who find winter driving intimidating (and of course get cheaper rail because of the senior rail cards...). One day I plan to try the "sleeper", it comes through town around 2130, and gets into London the next morning. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Lol...me too, but my Dad came up for Hogmanay this year, and he lives in Yorkshire. In his 80's it was too far to drive, so he used the train... Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Cheers for the info peeps. We had a good time and clocked up nearly 800 miles without incident,

We managed to get to the following(in no particular order)
Dalwhinnie Distillery
Fish ladder and the Hydro (no fish) and stopped for a brew at the theatre
Moulin Inn brewery and stopped for a pint Smile
Butterstone LR experience to visit the shop and purchased a teddy bear and the 65th anniversary LR book
Dunkeld to find a loo
Falls of Bruar and had a mooch around the shop and walked up the hill behind to see the falls.
also visited Queens View

While driving over the hills towards Dunkeld I spotted a SSE Unimog stuck in a field and a SSE Ford Ranger hooked up behind it trying to tow it free,....but not winning. The Ranger had a winch up front and this was extended out and hooked around the rear bumper of the 'mog and then hooked back onto the cable.
This was being using as a tow rope...as the winch didn't work.

I did offer to help in towing but the chaps were worried about me damaging the Landy, so I said good luck and left them to it.
Later on we were walking through Pitlochry and then Unimog and Ranger came past, I looked around and pointed, they waved back!

Will post some pics soon. 1999 Defender TD5 110
