Engine running problem
Hi All.

I have just arrived home from a long journey on the motorway.
I have a problem with the engine that I need some help with

All of a sudden, at about 65/70mph, a strange tapping sound started from the engine or transmission.
It sounds like a stick is attached to the propshaft and is hitting the underside of the vehicle. It is not an even tapping, more random and continueous.

I pulled over at the next services and opened the bonnet. The engine is running very lumpy, as though only firing on 4 cyclinders. It is not revving as it should. When revving you can clearly hear the tapping sound which increases in speed with the engine revs.

She has got me home (another 125 miles) but there is a problem that needs to be sorted.

Can anyone suggest any possible causes, or suggest where to look for the problem?

I had a new clutch & flywheel 3 weeks ago, but I don't think this has anything to do with the problem that I now have..

Many thanks

Tom

If you have had clutch work done recently my first area to check would be the crankcase sensor.

That will cause the lumpy running, I know as mine was missing the spacer !

Take it out and see if there is any damage to the end.

Pure guess is that the knocking may be related ?

Thanks Bob, I will give that a try tomorrow.
I am trying to find out whether the 'oil in the loom' symptoms might be similar to what I am experiencing.

I know that rough running is a symptom so i will check the ECU as well as the crank sensor.

Oil in the loom will cause rough running as well.

It is the tapping bit I can't work out.

The engine is still misfiring constantly at tickover and at all revs.

Called the AA out this afternoon to look at car. He was unable to diagnose the fault as his diagnostic computer (OBD) was unable to communicate with the ECU properly. (which he said he had never experienced before)
His hunch was that it might be an injector problem, although it made no knocking sounds which may or may not have changed his opinion on what the problem might be.

Decided to take it to a garage I had spoken to earlier.
On the drive there is did not do the knocking sound at all but unfortunately by the time I got to the garage they were closing - so were not able to look at it.

I could have left it with them but they said they were very busy and would not able to look at it until next week. So I decided to drive it home again rather than leave it there for 5 days.

During the drive home it started to make the engine knocking sound, exactly as it had done on the motorway.
It is quite a loud, fast knocking (3 or 4 knocks per second) but irregular. It is dependent on engine speed, not road speed.

I am trying to decide what is the best course of action is now:

Do I purchase my own Landrover dedicated fault reader, such as Britpart Lynx / Hawkeye / Nanocom EVO and try and diagnose problem myself?

Take it to a Landrover independent, although I have to say that I am struggling to find one nearby (does anyone know of one near Haslemere Surrey?)

Or bite the bullit and take it to Landrover Main Dealer...Sad Out of desperation!

Be very grateful for further advice...

(engine temp fine, oil level fine, no oil in red ecu terminal, no smoke, starts easily, just a misfire and odd engine tapping which is intermittant)

The nearest I can point you in the direction of, and recommend myself would be Challenger 4x4 in Tongham (near Farnham/Aldershot).

I have used them several times. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

My guess from personal experience is to change the injector harness (whether it shows oil at the connector or not) and fit new injector seals.

Thanks Guys,
I managed to get a diagnosis done today at More4x4 (Kingsley) near Bordon who have been excellent.
Autologic diagnostic found that the cylinder balance on cylinder 2 was incorrect. On inspecion the injector is jamming up and not allowing the spring loaded injector spindle to return to its raised position when the cam lifts. This was what was causing the intermitant knocking sound - the cam slapping the top of the compressed spindle.
New injector will be fitted tomorrow so hopefully problem solved.

Remember your new injector will need to be coded to the ecu.
