Trouble is most stuff in the shops for sale comes from there! Even big brand names have all their stuff manufactured in China! And they are very clever at hiding the country of origin on the labels! Even Landrover have parts manufactured in places like Romania and Mexico! Sad

Which by definition not necessarily is a bad thing.... Any substance to that statement?
We have an 8 year old VW New Beetle 1.8T, which as all New Beetles is produced by VW in Mexico, and it looks spic and span and drives like a gem. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Eric. Not sure what you mean by substance? The point I was trying to make was that although assembled in the UK a large part of a Landrovers content is made abroad in places like Romania and Mexico where labour rates would appear to be lower. I did not say or imply that quality suffered as a result. Very little is currently manufactured in the UK even by what would appear to be UK based companies which is sad. Also for the consumer many companies hide the country of origin of their parts so people unwittingly buy items that would at first glance appear to be UK manufactured when in actual fact they are not. I use the UK as a reference only as that is where I stay. It will be the same worldwide whatever country you come from! (more or less!) Neutral
P.S Romania and Mexico used as examples as very recently bought genuine Puma starter (Romania) and genuine wiper blades (Mexico)

Don, globalization of the economy... We can't escape that. I reacted because your post had a somewhat negative tone to it. Not everything produced in other countries is bad, glad that you seem to agree with that.

Eric, I agree totally with you on that point! As China is growing and expanding and as a result prices will start to rise its only a matter of time before big business looks elswhere for their manufacturing. Most things that are manufactured that are of poor quality regardless of which country they are made is normally because thats exactly what they were asked to make! A part that is made in Mexico can be every bit as good as a part made in the UK or elswhere its just that it will cost far less in Mexico or China as their health and safety laws are far more relaxed than a lot of other countries hence overheads are lower. I`m showing my age a bit because I can remember when every thing electrical on a Landrover was made by Lucas in the UK! Then it was electrical parts by Bosch made in Germany, now its Bosch made in Romania but still as good! The new Ford Transits we have at work are all made in Turkey yet are marketed by Ford as being the great British workhorse for over 40years! Confused

...was made by Lucas in the UK...

Quality...... ahem, ahem Shocked Laughing

The Lucas motto: "Get home before dark."

Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they still claim "sudden, unexpected darkness"

Lucas--inventor of the first intermittent wiper.

Lucas--inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.

The three-position Lucas switch--DIM, FLICKER and OFF.

The other three switch settings--SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.

Lucas dip-switch positions: LOW and BLOW (Bruce Miller, www.hermit.cc)

The original anti-theft devices--Lucas Electric products.

Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
