England 2013 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Keswick Green
Defender 90 radio/speaker wiring
Hi All
My first post so please be gentle!!
Ok, so I have just purchased a brand new 90 hardtop - Registered December 2013. It does not have a radio fitted as yet, but there does appear to be speakers fitted.
Does anyone know;
a) how to remove the blank faceplate without damaging the facia
b) are the speakers wired up and is it as straight forward as buying a single din head unit radio/cd/ipod connectivity, and just a case of 'plug and play?'

Any help appreciated!
Rog

Hello Rog
re b) you may want to check. My 2008 HT came with speaker grilles but no speakers behind them. When a chap installed a stereo for me we were initially baffled at the lack of sound, but the truth soon dawned............just a thought.

You need custom Steve !!!!! I beleive the wires should be there, somewhere, sometimes taped and tucked away, but as to the speakers sorry no experience. Don't they just unscrew in the front ????

Check the speakers are actually there and wired up as mentioned.
You will also probably need an ISO adaptor for the HU because LR changed from ISO in 2012 I believe. Rolling Eyes
The dash blank, it would be useful if you can post up a photo of it as I've never seen one yet so far but can imagine what is there.
Chances are it's removable from behind so a centre dash out job probably.

The standard speakers aint very good anyways,so your not missin nowt, you can also go up a size in speaker (4 inch to 5 .25) with minimum modification,if you can't do it any half decent audio place will (not Halfords tho). Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

DIY is best of all IMO if your competent, it's your LR and you can get things just right.
Another person will just do the job to work not for quality and function just pure function. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Rog,

In a similar position to yourself and here is a thread that may help you - assuming that your Dec 2013 registered model is a 2014 model year.

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic24355.html

I've followed Custom90steve's recommendations and he (and other forum members) has/have been most helpful.

Keep us up to date with progress as you are one step ahead of me on a journey of discovery. It will be interesting to hear how easy it is to locate the speaker wires when you remove those decorative speaker covers that have no speakers behind them. Also interested to hear how you get that blanking plate off to fit a radio/CD without causing any damage?

I've been looking at fitting a Kenwood KDC 4557U Radio/CD (£85) and a set of Kenwood E1065 Speakers (£30) - Didn't want anything too attractive to bad people when the Defender is left sitting unattended in a field for several hours.

/\/\ ALL car audio is attractive to thieves, remove the face plate or lose it.... in fact removing the face plate is no guarantee either Thumbs Up . Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

If it's a big worry get it insured specifically, otherwise it's just a risk you have to take.
Some equipment excluding the HU a simple work coat over it or similar soon stops any possible interest.
A HU that looks fairly standard and blends in looks less of a target too, which is why I like black only and not all these fancy chrome trim things and fancy button lay outs etc. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

A head unit with a removable front is another option

Mine is removable, and when removed there is an alarm style LED that flashes on it much like the Defender dash alarm does when locked. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R
