You forgot to mention yoursel on the thanks list BPman. Another great trip and thank you for the organisation of it. Great to meet new faces and catch up with the people I have met before. Lots of new lanes today, giving further insight to the vastness of the plains.

Thanks again.

Aye, a huge "thank-you" to Steve and Jim for a really great day out. Thumbs Up Bow down and great to meet a few familiar and quite a lot of new, but all friendly, faces Very Happy

The 30 or so 2CV's were something to behold, and the slightly surreal sight of meeting a French baker's van in the middle of Salisbury Plain will stick in my mind for a long time Shocked

Plenty of mud got gathered on the 90 and there's now quite a chunk of the Plains in the jet wash in Swindon Whistle

It was a really pleasant day on the Plain today, I was in the group that was the other side of the road to your meet. I apologise if we gazumped your meeting point.
My group had only 2 Defenders all the rest were Discoveries but all had a good time. The nicest thing about the day was that even though there were a few groups out today the only other "bunch" we came across was right at the end when we got to the infamous mud hole just south of the German Village. This did cause a little problem, we were heading north, they had got past the mud bit and it was a bit of a stalemate for a minute. My group had committed me to going through the deep water as I couldn't get out of the ruts. One of those rash decisions, it was starting to get dark, I know it's deep after watching others over the years so on we went with my lot looking on, giving all that good advice as friends do! It was deeper than expected, I allways smile when the experts say about the bow wave, sort of goes out the window when the front nosedives under the water and it's up to the bulkhead vents! Kept going and we climbed out the other side, the other group, mainly Disco 3 drivers were a little dissappointed but the got their entertainment when one of the Discos couldn't quite get out of the deep hole, so was just sat there headlights above the water and his spare door mounted wheel half submerged. Tug with a winch and he was out. It's allways the way, when there's a problem you find yourself in the way of others.
I notice on your route you also did the Stonehenge sightseeing trip, is it me or does it just like a complete mess? Those in the know had parked along the greenlane in many strange fashions, was interesting to see the electric Defenders, I think they need a few more to cope with visitor numbers judging by the queues and those that seemed to have given up and decided to walk back to their cars. Whatever possessed the powers that be to isolate the henge from the casual visitor, to be honest prices have come down but Ł6.90 for entry to walk round a path at a distance from the stones is not my idea of a value for money deal.
All in all nice quiet day, plenty of deep puddles but the important thing was that we all enjoyed ourselves and all of us got home,

Funnily enough we all mentioned on the CB, when we were waiting for the Sonehenge "train" to get out of the way, that the byway was a right mess with normal 4x2 cars floundering about everywhere, and that it won't be too long before I suspect the council will close it.

Shame, they could do something like they do on bridleways (certainly around Swindon anyway) where they build a cattle grid type thing, to stop lesser cars from going over (like a 6" hump or something), that only a 4x4 could navigate.

Looks like you had a great day.

What's the etiquette on the Plains, as the groups seem to have more than 4 vehicles...is it ok for large groups to travel together..?

Cheers

Simon

we had no problems with our group, we did plan to split into 2 groups had all the people turned up. having said that the citroen group were about 40 vehicles, we past them a couple of times. we mainly stuck to made up roads.

there is an assumption that over the holiday period there would be lots of groups out and about, but we only saw 2 other groups.

apparently there was a husky event, horse and hounds, joggers and a mountain bike event running the same time, it's a big place
