Boiling Battery
Guys need some suggestions!
I replaced my optima battery with an exide agm battery on my defender td5. The battery is like overcharging, getting hot and smelling after an hour of driving. The alternator voltage is stable at 13.8v. Any suggestion what could be the cause! Can't figure out if it's the battery or the alternator Sad

You've probably got one cell shorted out.
What's the voltage with the engine off for a while?

A decent voltmeter.

If battery is healthy and alternator good then if fully then voltage is about 12.8 volt

If a reasonably charged battery is less then 10.8 volts then one cell down hence over charging etc as Laurie says.

An alternator with an output of 13.8 volts is perfectly OK.
This is the standard set output.

Just a quick update. I removed battery from vehicle. After nearly a week the battery voltage got down to 9.7v. So I am assuming a shorted cell is draining the battery down. I will take it back to supplier.

If the battery is maintenance free type remove all caps apply large electrical load to battery if bad cell you should see it bubble

REMEMBER BATTERY GAS IS EXPOLSIVE AND A BAD CELL CAN GAS OFF QUICKLY, GOGGLES GLOVES ETC. DONT WANNA GET SUIED !!

Thanks for your help guys. Battery was replaced under guarantee a shorted cell was the cause of all this.
Happy new year Smile

I would suggest it is your alternator, it may be providing the correct voltage but it should
stop charging when the batt is charged.

I had the same problem on the way back from Spain a few years ago and to get back i
had to keep disconnecting the charger when I had started it and used it through the days travel,
note: it only needs a small amount of charge for normal running but needs to be well charged to
enable starting.

Engine Management System also plays an important part..... Thumbs Up

Cut and paste from Workshop Manual.....

The 'smart' regulator controls the output voltage from the generator to protect the battery; at low temperatures battery charge acceptance is very poor so the voltage needs to be high to maximise any re-chargeability, but at high temperatures the charge voltage must be restricted to prevent excessive gassing with consequent water loss. The Engine Management System (EMS), which controls the regulator, will calculate the voltage set point required for the ensuing conditions. The 'traditional' regulator controls voltage against generator temperature, which means the battery temperature will lag a long way behind so there will be significant periods of operation when battery charging is compromised. With this system, the EMS can set the voltage by inferring the battery temperature from information received from it's various sensors, hence voltage will accurately follow the battery's needs. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I would suggest the regulator is now part of the Alternator - so as I said I would change the Alternator Rolling Eyes

Glad you're sorted. You could always change the alternator as suggested too? Or if you've a carbon pile rheostat, voltmeter and ammeter as per the workshop manual carry out the load testing functional test of the alternator. Me I wouldn't bother. You've obviousdly got a good warranted battery. If it happens again look a little deeper perhaps?

Happy New Year to you as well. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
