2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Java Black
I still have a clunk changing up to 2nd then 3rd
Evening

I still have a clunky gear box from1-2 and 2-3rd gears it's noticeably work as the car warms up

It's been in and had a new clutch loads of bushes half shafts flange and diff back lash adjusted

Any ideas and will a oil change help?

Have you driven another tdci to compare?

They are CERY clunky especially at low revs and in low gears Cheers, David

I have driven a fair few of our company ones they are commercial with cherry pickers and they don't seam half as bad... Not sure wether their weight softens and absorbs it but mines seams worse

Yeah it don't seam right also taking foot on and off power when cruising u get it too

I've noticed that it's very difficult getting it to disengage diff lock too

I'm having my suspicions about the adaptor shaft between the gear box and transfer box??

If you can get it up (SECURELY!) on axle stands then maybe you can go around and find where the play is by moving things one by one?

Does sound like there's some play somewhere. I get some clunking in overrun in 1st but not when cruising at all. Cheers, David

My "clunks" got worse and worse, and ended up with the adaptor shaft trashed! Same symptms as you have...

I bought a defender 110 39000 miles 2010 puma with the same sort of issues, the dealer said it was normal as all of them clunk, but after taking it to an independant and a main dealer who said the clunk is in the driveline, transfer box was replaced, ,new clutch and rear half shaft replaced and the clunk is not as bad but still there, its a shame as i like the puma but the clonk gets me down and i carnt keep throughing money at it, i will have to put up with it. Although it is much better than when i bought it. Embarassed

I had a 2008 Puma with a shocking gear change quality. 6th was very pleasant, getting there left me in a cold sweat. Juddery clutch, driveline shunt, revs staying too high,I managed about 4 smooth gear changes in 15,000 miles. Dealer response? the ubiquitous "they're all like that, sir". I can't help but think the problem with some 2008 models is more severe than something an oil change would fix, but good luck!

Lacking the patience or tenacity of other members of this forum, I sold it. I regard the ability to make a smooth gear change time after time to be a fairly fundamental requirement.

I now drive a 13 year old Td5, with a gear change like I imagine a bolt action rifle would be like, but I'm thinking of trying a Puma again.

I owned a td5 before the puma and although the puma as a much better heater and cruises at motorway speeds much better than my td5 i would think twice before buying a puma. In many ways its alot more refined than the td5, but the driveline clunk is awful. I have spent £1300 on it and i think its as good as i will get it. Confused

I drive a 2011 model and have had a terrible clunk. Land Rover sent up an engineer coz I wouldn't accept it was normal for the mileage. He got thee dealer to measure the backlash on both diffs (rear diff showing plenty) and both sides of the centre diff which also shows backlash.

I've spoken to the Service Manager who was of the impression that rear diff and transfer box show excessive backlash but he hasn't got confirmation as to what action LR are going to take yet. Damned Christmas....

So perhaps you should look at the centre diff outputs by removing the pto cover and jamming the drive from the top and measuring the backlash on each propshaft flange.

I've had my 2011 90 for about 18mths and 9k miles now. I have to say that it does drive reasonably well with no real clunking, you cannot drive it like it a euro box but you can certainly get a smooth gear change if you are a little slower on the change. Contrary to some on here it can rev without sounding like it's going to blow up too!

I have had one new half shaft on the rear of my 2010 puma the dealer said the other side was ok, and new end caps, they said the rear diff play wasnt excessive, i have my doubts the diff is the only thing i havent changed, one independent land rover garage said why not put the td5 diff on but i dont know about that, as i say its a lot better, the dealer says theres many part in the drive train that if they all have a bit of play it adds up to the clunk we all seem to get. Its not good enough a 20k land rover shouldnt have theres problems which i think the dealer knows about and fob us off with they all do that sir because they havent got a clue. Bow down

Some people are obviously less bothered about this problem. When I sold mine, a bloke came for a test drive. We kangaroo-ed along for a few miles yerking forwards and backwards in our seats at each gear change. I smiled reassuringly, thinking "no chance of a sale".
We got back, he grinned widely and paid me the full asking price. Either he likes that sort of thing, or perhaps he's on here posting about what a pup he bought.
