Is it high milage? What about warn ignition barrel

Mileage is 130k, but the ignition barrel 'feels' pretty good. It rotates ok, but I'll check the electrical continuity tomorrow evening and see if it's starting to fail.

Sticking or worn starter solenoid or the small wire has fallen off the back of the starter? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Check the earthing strap on the engine and the battery. Both ends each.

A genuine battery was not cheap!
![]() But......it's an 800A/120amp-hr battery, and is substantially bigger and heavier than the Halfords 'original spec' unit it replaced, which was 78amp-hr. The only type of battery I've seen that comes close spec-wise is a light commercial vehicle one, and they're no cheaper and/or the wrong size. Still, I've found over the years that proper OE stuff generally works/fits/lasts substantially better than pattern bits. |

A genuine battery is also the only kind I know which will last over ten years and 200,000 miles, which actually makes it pretty good value in my book!

My 2002 90 is on the original battery, I would replace it with a genuine one

What about the battery in the remote plipper? and/or the excitor ring thing that's around the ign barrel...
(assuming you've got an alarm set up on yours)... the excitor ring looks for the plipper then "unlocks" the passive immobilisation. I'd be looking at those first. |

Had exactly the same symptoms a few months back.
It turned out to be a worn starter solenoid. They are cheap to replace, about £10 from ebay (an ebay search reveals a number of suppliers) It is an OK job to do yourself if a bit fiddly to get the top starter motor bolt off. If you do a google search there are a number of forum postings on how to remove the td5 starter motor. Some garages will tell you the whole starter motor needs replacing but the £10 option would be my first port of call. |
