QUICK RUN TO CHAMONIX AND BACK!
Hi, first post so be nice! Rolling Eyes

Long and short of it is that's I bought a '02 90 van TD5 to go for a smoking to Chamonix (yes in the French alps!) and after a week turned around and came back.

Very pleased that I didn't need to use my brake-down cover once can you believe?!

I did 1843.4 miles, burnt 351.58 litres of Gazole

So me question is does 23.84 mpg sound about right?

The temp gauge sits at a rock solid 40%, never bothered to refit the viscous fan because wasn't needed.

What temp does most other TD5's run at?

Hi Razler.

Fuel consumption is about what i would expect on that sort of run due to the Td5,s short gearing they,re more economical when pottering around the b roads.

My temp gauge sits at about 40% summer and winter, changing the thermostat made no difference Sad

Welcome to the forum. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Cheers Lou Sparts,

I was expecting around 25mpg.

I was sitting at around 65mph so maybe If I had of reduced it buy 5mph I may have got better returns..

I bought a thermostat before I left just to have but thinking I wont fit it now if the norm temp needle position is at 40%.

Next time I will do it in a Porsche 911 Turbo... Sadly buy the time my funds return to the norm after paying for fuel, tolls, ferry, and accommodation I shall be too old to drive a 911!

24 mpg is all I get out of my standard 52 plate TD5 90 CSW when on the motorways. I generally sit at 70 mph on the clock,(GPS says thats 66 true mph). I have done a few long journeys in it recently, and it is pretty consistent.

Pottering around, it does about 26. Never got anything better, although I have never really driven for economy. She generally gets a good thrashing. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

G'day Razler,
I have 90 TD5 van, it's relocating to Chur in 2 weeks time, after xmas , c 1100km.
I'm also hoping to sit at c 65mph (say 100k) and 80% will be on french motorways. I'll count the litres.
Bloomin' well hope it's nearer 30 than 23 - but I have had an Ashcroft 1.2 ratio put in a few months back - for these long journeys .... be interesting to see if there is a difference. Neutral Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...

Yeah sparkylee iv got one photo.. and that's all Sad

We departed fr Calais at around noon so buy the time we hit the alps area it was dark.. Damit!! And then when I started the journey back it was dark.. Next time I will rethink about timing so the scenery can be taken in..

French roads are fantastic, 'Great Britain' is run down in comparison..

I would of pushed the mph up a little bit anything over 75ish and the noise level increases abit, the sound was first thought tobe coming from the front left wheel area but when the clutch is depressed the droning reduces/ disappears .. ???

How do I upload photos?

The good old Sanef Toll Tag Mr. Green Best thing, ever! (When in France)! Apart from that if you pay with coins as you go, you don't notice the cost as much! When you get one big bill it can be a bit of a shock Laughing Laughing An engine to TDi for!

By the way that's my brother in the photo, I'm not as ugly as that!

That photo was just after a quick stop at a service station and a Burger King whopper meal, ooo yeah! another good thing about France, even burger kings are nice, clean and super tasty.. I feel like re-washing my hands after a pit stop in the U.K..

Yeah the tolls are a wee bit pricey BUT I'd rather hand over money and see the benefits than just hand it over..

The coolest thing are the wildlife flyover bridges they have there.. Basically a bridge that's sides have been shuttered with wooden pallet like walls and there's trees growing on them, suppose the idea is that with well fenced of roads little bambys etc follow the fences up to nice attractive over road bridges, with the shuttering aren't spooked by landy's etc tooling towards them..
Ha, 5 miles after leaving the ferry on the way home saw a up-hoofed horse lying at the side of the road waiting for someone to collect it.. If they ever do.. R.I.P up-hoofed four legged large animal, should of been In France... Crying or Very sad
