Morning all. i picked up my new vehicle on Friday pm and this morning it failed to start. It has an IBS split charge system installed with 2 optima batteries fitted. My question is can i just charge the red top with it still connected to the vehicle or is there anything i need to be aware of with the IBS system? im hoping the battery is just low owing to it been stood for several weeks in the workshop. I did manage to start it by linking the 2 batteries using the IBS panel on the dash.

Thanks for that, I only have a very basic charger (halfords type) hopefully shouldn't be any problems using this. Once I get my head around what sockets and lights are running off which battery I may be asking some more dumb questions!

I also have an isolator (red plastic key) on the seat box which I have just noticed. Any idea what this would be used for? It doesn't seem to turn anything off. Obviously I realise you can't say for sure but any pointers?

Has your vehicle ever had a winch (or similar) fitted? An engine to TDi for!

Yes it has a winch fitted, not that I need it though. It was already on when I bought it. Maybe the isolator for that then?

Yep, that's probably it! Most winch wiring systems include an isolator switch like that one, to stop it from drawing power when not needed and then flattening the battery

So if the switch is in the on position that could be the cause of the flat main battery.

Yep that's very likely! Make sure the isolator switch is in the "off" position and see how it goes. Fingers crossed that's the problem, as its a very simple one to rectify! An engine to TDi for!

Well it can't be that that's flattening the battery. The key only comes out when it's in the off position. Will leave it on charge and see what happens tomorrow morning.

The winch is unlikely to be a significant drain on the battery if power is just switched on to it. The solenoids/relays will not be energised until the wander lead/remote is triggered then it will be a significant drain on the battery.
Having said that if it is a bridge type winch with a built in light then that would be a current drain. These lights are not very noticeable. The alarm, the analogue clock will have a continuous current draw on the battery and are the most likely cause of the battery drain, alongside any interior light being left on. A recommended battery charger would be a cTek charger and there is a group buy going on in the sister site www.disco3.co.uk Brendan |

Well it's been in charge for 6 hours and voltage is 12.8, it was 12.2 at the start of charging. The winch is a warn 9.5ti and the isolator key is out so assume its in the off position. I'll see what it does in the morning and put it back on charge for a few more hours tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Remote Control: Remote switch, 12' (3.7m) lead, thermometric indicator, S2 elements, integrated flashlight It has a integrated flashlight. So clock + alarm + flashlight on + few weeks = flat battery. Am not really surprised. Optima red top at 12.2 volts not capable of starting engine? A fully charged battery should be at about 12.8 volts Now an Odyssey 1500 sat at 12.2 volts should be capable of starting a Defender engine as it is only at about 50% discharge. Now why should not an Optima at 12.2 volts not start an engine. Several possible explanations. 1) Incorrect voltage reading on open circuit 2) Battery not in best condition 3) Bad battery/starter connection limiting current flow 4) Starter motor problems 5) Errr, pass Now if the Optima does not respond, I would suggest an Odyssey PC1500 which IMO is a better battery as a replacement. Can you expand on the integrated light? The lead isn't connected so surely not a problem. If the optima doesn't respond I'll be making a Phonecall tomorrow to where i got it from, only picks it up on Friday night. It started fine when I linked the yellow and red together using the control panel.

The integrated light is in the bridge of the winch. It is to enable to watch the wire being spooled onto the drum. It is a low light output/current draw
It normally comes on when the winch is powered up. The wander lead/remote controls the power to the solenoids which controls the main winch drive in or out. Note that the Optima red top is a starter battery whereas the yellow top is a combined starter/leisure battery. From personal experience I rate the Odyssey batteries over the Optima batteries.
