We're having some repairs done to our parking are and this beauty turned up to deliver the paving blocks.

All around here there are small companies basically on the side of the road making concrete blocks and paving blocks. The vehicle of choice is the trusty Land Rover. Every day these old girls runs around Lagos delivering blocks, they're loaded up to the max every time and they just keep on going.

The youngest series 3,s are now thirty years old its good to see them still working after all that time, a testament to their simplicity and ruggedness.

The engineers working on Defenders replacement could learn a thing or two there. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Unfortunately I'm regularly told by my marketing department that today's customers don't want simplicity and ruggedness - they want bling, more bling and so much electro-trickery that only a 10 year old boy with a fascination for gaming can operate it. Just look at some of the tricked up Defenders on this site? How often do you see folk on here stripping their Defender of all the fashion accessories and boldly claiming that form follows function at its most basic level.

Minimalism, utilitarianism, functionality and reliability went out of fashion many years ago.

Defender is still simple, basic heating, basic stereo (if at all),basic electrics, simple mechanics, basic suspension and transmission. If they base the replacement on the T5 platform it will need a whole lot more maintenance.

You only have to look at the utility Land Cruisers and how many they sell of them to see that not everybody wants bling 2005 Td5 90 XS

I'm all in favour of simplicity as long as I can keep my heated seats, heated front windscreen, rear screen, air con and uprated hi-fi....... Neutral

On a serious note I drove a FL2 mk2 HSE earlier this week and could'nt help playing with the heated steering wheel and just wondered why on earth anyone would want one and then down my narrow lane the side sensors kept beeping to tell me I was close to the hedges....I knew that already. Also why have a key fob with a button to press to open the door and then no where to plug it - in the end I just threw it on the passenger seat!

I think there are far too many gizmos now that most people have no idea what it is to drive properly because they are so isolated from the road, sounds, feel and other senses you get from, dare I say it, a more honest drive in the Puma which still miles away from a basic 300...let alone a SIII etc

Sorry - just realised I have rambled on a tad BM52

Looks like the marketing department has the same problem as the French national forest service. This service is now staffed no longer by people who work the forest, but now it is staffed by "well-educated" bureacrats who sit in Paris and make intelligent decisions that end up doing more harm then good to the local fawn and forest that is far from Paris.

My Defender is a purpose built and purpose used vehicle. It is equiped to take me hunting and that is what it does. No fancy tires and wheels, enough comfort to get me to the hunts, and a gun safe.
