Myself, I use one from the Classic Range Rover [about 1994 MY].. it is autodip and I find the little reading lights in the bottom very useful [urm - bottom of the mirror I mean].
The additional width of view is also invaluable. Yes, you need power - but can be easily arranged from the interior light.... although that does mean it is 'always live' Click image to enlarge |

YES! There is a very cool mod to do, which so far, only two people (AFAIK) have done - and I was the first one!!! The other is pj2106 (or whatever numbers are after his initials)
I got an auto-dimming compass mirror from a Discovery 2 SE - top top spec - not all SE's have the compass. I went a slightly different route to pj, as in the trial and error process, I sawed the original Defender mirror off too short. Here are some pictures: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The mirror has three wires - aside from the obvious earth, one is for an ignition power, so that when you turn the key, the power is lit up, and the other is to connect to the reversing light feed, so that when you select reverse, the dimming function is disabled, to enable you to see clearly when reversing. The way PJ did it, which was a lot simpler, is to merely keep the original Defender clip in mirror arm, and bolt the D2 mirror to that. I did have to modify the bracket, as the plug connector tends to want to vacate the arm at the front. I enlarged the hole in the bracket for the plug to be a bit more hidden at the back. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top |

Interesting. how much bigger is the D2 mirror? Does it fit between the sun visors?

This is slight problem. They don't fit between the mirrors, but for the driver at least, you can still put the visor down, it just covers a bit of it. I did think about cutting the visors accordingly, but frankly, it's not unusable how it is now. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

As I said above, I use the Range Rover mirror. If mounted in original position, & as you rightly imply, this would also clash with the sunvisors - but I made a block to fit between bracket and base in order to bring the whole mirror assembly further into the LR and clear the visors. |

I don't ever recall needing to dip / dim the mirror in my 90 ? I had assumed that with being high up I never got any dazzle through the rear mirror.
