Off road weekend for minimum AT shod vehicles - 5/6 Apr'14
Some of you may remember a while back that I asked James (JST on here) if he could adapt some of his drive round day routes for vehicles running All Terrain tyres, rather than the usual pre-requisite of Mud Terrains. Basically, I fancied a go at a DRD but am too tight to buy a second set of wheels adorned with mud tyres!

A bit of email to'ing and fro'ing later and we've settled on the first weekend of April 2014 (Sat 5th / Sun 6th), as at this later time in the year, those with the less aggressive tyres can give it a go, as, hopefully, it will be a bit drier!!! Overall, the idea is a social and off road gathering across the two days.

To allow for people travelling (i.e me!) we would meet at the Waie Inn (Zeal Monochorum, Devon) on the Saturday for lunch at the pub before heading off to the Goodwinch Off Road site for a few hours to explore its options and get a feel for off roading.

We would then head across to Bampton (1hr ish away) near Tiverton to set up camp for the evening. Basic facilities provided would be a field! I'm told it's flat (in places!) . Aspiration then being to have a relaxed evening before a full day’s Drive Round on the Sunday at the Bampton Site.

The routes there are all optional with bypass sections. From the pics I've seen of previous days, it is a challenging course but there is help and guidance on hand for those that need it (i.e me!), plus you can always miss bits out. Minimum of BFG AT tread pattern is required. The route has the potential for vehicle damage, as I guess, does any route we do off road and so you should pick and choose the sections you wish to do to match both your vehicles and your own ability combined with what you wish to achieve or accept that day! There is the risk of scratching the vehicle, particularly at that time of year if it is a mild spring.

The plan is to run two groups of six vehicles and I understand that including me, half of the slots have already been taken up. It struck me that there may be others on here that fancied a crack at a DRD in (hopefully) tamer conditions.

Cost wise, £85 per vehicle for the weekend which includes the off road excursions and the camping only. Meal at the pub on Saturday would be at your own expense but James will book the table for everyone. Saturday night there is nothing formally laid on which gives you the option to head to a local pub or enjoy camping delights!

Cameras, boots & waterproofs advisable!

If anyone fancies it, suggest you drop JST a PM and he can take it from there. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

Thumbs Up One or both halves sounds right for me too.

My Coopers are 60/40 off/on road (as advertised). Proven fine for all but very slippery Exmoor, having TC as well.

Its not so much storing MT wheels so much as swapping them over myself that's a pain, literally. Are snow chains any good for mud? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Can I provisionally reserve a space if there are any left please? - I need to contact a friend down there who may want to co-drive (and cook me breakfast)

Thanks,

John
