Well my rattly gear changes has been reduced a great deal. Had a new clutch kit fitted (there was a recall/service bulletin out) and had the rear ball joint that connects on the diff replaced. Now there are no sound when shifting "slowly/nicely" and a little bit of sound when changing rough/quickly.

If you work through the drivetrain and remove all the backlash you will get a very nice gearchange, but only for a while. As the backlash 'wears' back in, the tendency to clunck will return.

You have to master the old-fashioned skill of changing gear smoothly!

They wouldn't give me any real details John but mines the same as Marious, nice and easy does it with no racing changes. I think it was definitely something to do with the coupling between main box and transfer case and I know they also put new rear axles in so there was obviously excessive wear there as well.
3rd Deafener and the worst by far when it came to trying to change well but now OK so I'm happy.......

Mine was very clunky, but on inspection it turned out the bolts holding the propshaft in place were not tight, some slight play in there. Worth checking, because now, some 4 months later im having to replace the UJ's, probably due to the movement

Am I dreaming or was there a recent thread on a modification/recall for some sort of shim to improve gearchange on Puma??? Been searching but can't find it... Neutral Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

smb - thanks fella - that's the one - couldn't find it with the search tools for some reason Thumbs Up

As it happens, I just mothballed my Defender yesterday, it's in the garage under a veil of ACF50 & Scottoiler 365 because I don;t need it for a few weeks. I'll set a reminder to see if the local garage will do it while-I-wait in a couple of months' time...as it only takes 0.7 hours (according to the bulletin) maybe they'll do it while I have a coffee (and maybe even look over the mechanic's shoulder to watch Razz ) Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Mine was back at the dealers 2 weeks ago for a leak (surprise) among a few other bits and bobs, but whilst there they carried out a software update : Q225 - ENGINE CALIBRATION UPDATE : since I've had it back its drives sooo much better, even the other half says it drives better!!!! Shocked Don't know wether they did anything else, it doesn't say so on the work docket - but hey I'm not complaining. Very Happy

Forgot to say that mine has had a new transfer box fitted at 99K and end of warranty as it developed a weird bagpipe type noise and it was getting worse.
Cost about 7 grand ($AU) apparently but they didn't ask me for a donation and it's driving very well now.

Just because it's a Deafener doesn't mean it should be a dog to drive smoothly.

I wonder how they fixed the backlash and why these things are made this way fresh out the factory. Mine is a 2.4 Puma and the backlash is annoying unless I take great care over gear changes and with only. 36k on the clock there shouldn't be any problem with a lightly used vehicle...even a Kandrover.
