Samaritans needed for elderly this winter
An appeal has gone out today for 'samaritans' to look after elderly people in the coming winter. I think this is especially applicable to us - owning a 4x4. My wife and I both want to join the campaign if there are people needing help anywhere in our town - we already look out for our elderly neighbours, clearing their paths every winter. Of course, having someone with a 4x4 (contactable by phone) could mean a matter of life or death to some. I'm a heating engineer, and I tell my elderly customers to just leave their heating on in the winter. It's thermostatically controlled, so it cannot eat all their savings - despite the b*stard energy companies and the government's pathetic green campaigns. Generally speaking, heating left on uses only a bit more than heating that is timed.

So if you know of an elderly person or couple in your neighbourhood, go and knock on their door BEFORE winter strikes, and give them your phone number. Better still, if you know of someone living somewhere way off a main road, go and see them. 4x4 owners sometimes get a bad image in these 'green' days - and if we're lucky, we too will be elderly one day.

Also join your local 4x4 response group , one of the main roles for the last 2 years has been to assist home carers and meals on wheels as a 4x4 taxi service. Not glamorous but an essential function .

I spent several days in Reading last year helping out.

I would say this is as well as looking out for your own neighbours.

I'd agree with the original post, and if you join your local 4x4 response group you'll be part of a coordinated effort and be sent to where you're most needed. At Lothian 4x4 Response we've just recently signed an agreement with City of Edinburgh Council to assist in challenging conditions.
