"Drive it like you stole it" ....... Thumbs Up

You drive like Miss Daisy....

Mine gets driven enthusiastically...... or in the words of the police officer "you were making a bit too much progress" lol... he was a bit shocked that a Defender was pulling away from his 3 Series BMW on a twisty road.

I admit its not big - and it's not clever.

But my Defender is a lot of fun with its current power output - but now needs more Twisted Evil

All modern diesels will benefit for a 'clear out' at times..... but they also need looking after. Mine gets oil changes every 6000 miles, regular transmission oil changes etc, good quality fuel - and gets a proper warm up and cool down period... it doesn't just thrashed from cold and turned off.

In some ways I'm lucky in the fact that wher mine is parked there is not much of a chance of thrashing it untill I've got onto a road that is condusive to any speed above 25mph, the same applies for when I get home so there is allways a period of "calm time" after starting/stopping. After a number of years fixing machinery of all sorts I have allways tried to have mechanical sympathy as I've never been a big fan of having to fix my own Whistle

Usually fairly reserved as I'm constantly waiting for the next fault to appear! Laughing average 2-2.5k gear change and around 3k when towing a 3-3.5t trailer.

I am with 22900013A on this one. I tend to drive it mild- smooth gear changes, normally somewhere between 2 and 2.5k. Sometimes I might drive a little harder to give it a good clean out, sometimes will take it really really easy. I need mine to be reliable and touch wood in the past 50,000 miles I have had only one failure (was still driveable).

If I wanted to drive fast and hard I would buy a car, not a commercial workhorse.

I live on a derestricted road in the country.
I'm rarely having to drive at 30mph.
I don't push it as far as it will go but I don't hang about either.

it is really actually quite impressive what you can get off the line in 2nd until the first gear change! especially if you keep it rolling a little and predict the lights well

have burned many a eurobox and big diesel saloon but mostly by using my brain not the cars speed Cheers, David

I must actually confess I was a little bit off on my gearchange points - having watched my revs a bit more closely since thsi thread started, on the country road to work I found my changes were more at 2000-2100rpm, so slightly higher than I thought, however that is on a twisting country road. It has sufficient straights to do 60mph for a few sections, but the handling is not good enough to allow that on bends, some of which will see me down at 25 or so. On the flat gearchanges are taken earlier, more in keeping with what I claimed before.

So far I have had no issues with the gearbox or transmission or engine, I wonder if the same can be said for the drive it like you stoie it brigade?

With regards to speed limits, as a professional driver I am reliant upon keeping a clean driving license, as such I can't afford to speed and I find it is in no way difficult to stick to the limits. Cruise control on the lorries does make it easier though, I wish the 110 had it. 2011 110 USW

Having seen a Defender involved in an accident on a country road where it had rolled over and had the cab flattened, I plan to drive my new one very carefully and look into having some form of roll cage fitted.

Mine has been used on road/track use and 330 hours on a dyno mainly doing full power runs and prolonged steady state... and no problems at all. Even with 200Nm more than standard going through it!

Same here ... I drive a fair few and think the gear change on mine is one of the smoothest i've driven Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.
