From the experience I gained from being the boat member at a dive club (lots of boat neglect before me) Ensuring it is looked after is a major factor in how long it will last- they had a Yamaha 140 which was 5 years old where the coolant channels had corroded through the block - basically was worthless. The other engine we had was a Selva 115 (Yamaha) which was 10 years old with similar use but was washed out and serviced on time- was like new and sailed through services without needing any extra parts.
Another bonus is that Boat engines are like Land Rovers..... if it is looked after and serviced correctly it won't lose much value . Sounds like your heart is set on the Yamaha- end of the day it should last you 10+ years (depending on use) and as long as you look after it you will have no problems with it either. I would say it is worth the extra if you can stretch to it I can't advise any other engines as all ours were 115+hp........ Maybe go for a 250hp upgrade Glyn |

I work in the marine industry, I can't recommend what make to buy but Honda 4 stroke outboards do not have a great reputation.

Thanks Glyn, use to have Suzuki 250's on the rib and they never missed a beat, never had an issue with the previous yamaha either, but Suzuki don't do a 30.....
The other issue I forgot to mention is the best local agent in my opinion sells mariner / yamaha. Pete |

I have a two stroke Tohatsu 3.5hp and that goes well on my bath tub. A mate has a 40 or a 50hp Tohatsu 4 stroke on his rib and that goes well. I think Tohatsu are a re-badged Yam or Suzuki? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Suzi's are great, had them before, but they don't do a 30 as far as I can see.
Landlord on the case, thanks to all. |
