I don't like remote start on a manual gearbox as it's not good to start a 4x4 without the clutch depressed.
However, there are plenty of kits available. Clifford now has a full mobile (albeit Bluetooth not GSM) install available - http://www.clifford.co.uk/ I've always thought about what happens if you accidentally leave it in gear too!  Craig Rogers

Thanks, am getting a price off a clifford dealer now, can you tell me what your point was with the not liking starting it in gear being a 4x4, i am inteested to know?

Well, if it's in gear and starts, we all know what happens.
However, when you start a 4x4, particularly one with all the gubbings a Defender has, you really should be depressing the clutch pedal to take the load out of the drive train on start up. It also means there's less to turn by the starter motor. I think it states this in the manual too.??? But maybe the occasional start isn't going to to do too much harm, however, the thought of accidentally leaving it in gear and starting it...... Craig Rogers

nice info btw, i nver thought about that, i have never started mine with the clutch down apart from the click click gear check before i even turn the key, interesting fact, you learn something new every day!!

The other way of looking at this is if you start the engine with the clutch depressed you are exerting an amount of axial loading on the crankshaft before building up oil pressure to take up the thrust force. In other words you 'could' be wearing your thrust bearing sooner causing more crankshaft end float and additional wear on your engine. |

Agree - Always what I have been told - I never start a car with the foot on the clutch (other than the modern 1s you have to, or old Saabs). Mark. |

...of course, there's sometimes a good reason to completely ignore that in off-road conditions and start in gear with the clutch engaged too.....
However, most of the time, it's just down to habbit. I've always done it for some reason in all my cars. Then again, my ex used to leave the car in gear most of the time............  Craig Rogers

i have a golf 16v race car which is only ever bump started, if it mattered that much, it would be shafted by now, seeing as landrovers are as refined as rust then im sure it'll outlast me.

It's also down to the starter (and battery) having more to turn over. ...the comment about wearing an unlubed thrust bearing is a good one though! Craig Rogers

There is the question regarding the remote start as to why? Equally why not many could say...
Most reasons have been breached already however it's also worth remembering that the LR has go be unlocked too to start it. So your leaving it running and un-locked un-manned. It could be illegal doing that in a public place (just assuming could be) And that ,dans someone has only got to run up to it or hop in and they are off. Could be before you even notice. Lots of variables and a nice idea but practicality say's it's not very worthwhile. Then of course there is the glow plug side of things where a petrol can just be instantly started.
