The NAS-style step towbar does seem to be too high for the majority of caravans unless you use some sort of drop plate.
The Dixon Bate adustable tow bar is excellent if you need the ability to swap hitches or change the height for different applications. I use one for my Sankey trailer and caravan, although I did buy one of the two-pin sliders for the latter. It doesn't have so much play in it and so doesn't rattle. If you don't need that sort of flexibility then you can't really go wrong with the standard LR fixed tow bar. I sold my NAS step as it was too high and fitted the adjustable Dixon Bate to bar. I use a double pin slider but even with the single pin slider never noticed any noise.

Many thanks for the advice. Think I will go for the standard multi hight towbar with 13 pin electrics. Great looking Defender.

Make sure that the dealer installs the 13 pin plug in the hole in the rear crossmember, rather than just on a bracket beneath it. Darren

I used to tow a twin wheeled Bessacar behind and a Disco with its soft suspension, last December I changed to the 110 which has a harder suspension so I fitted one of these http://www.bradleydoublelock.co.uk/shop/pr...;xSec=1794 which takes out the risk of snapping the A frame of the caravan. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

Blimey, haven't seen one of those for a while. I used to use one years ago when towing a lightweight caravan with a leaf sprung Land Rover. I've never felt the need with a coil sprung LR though, even the 110.
It's interesting that the little graphic shows a Classic Range Rover - probably one of the softer sprung models  Darren

I didn't notice the old Range Rover I will have to take a look at mine to se what they have put on it. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off.

Not a tin can tower, so couldn't comment on height etc, but have you thought about just buying your own (say dixon bate adjustable) and fitting it yourself? From what I remember is that Land Rover charge about £300-600 for the kit where you can do it yourself for half that........ Just a thought.

That's a fair point. Installing the towbar is easy - especially so on a new vehicle. However, installing the 13 pin socket loom is a real pig of a job:

Well we had our first trip away towing the caravan with the Defender. The Defender did a great job. Rock solid on the road with no swaying or funny business.
I chose the multi height to bar from Land Rover when I ordered. The tow bar is at it's lowest and I am just about level,maybe a tad to high still. What do you think? Click image to enlarge |

Thats a good point. Photo was taken with it empty.
One annoying thing is that I have to open the rear door to hitch up because the Winterhoff hitch fouls the spare wheel. Then the jockey wheel gets in the way of the door closing. 'm going to try and find a jockey wheel with a lower handle. |
