Think most diesel cars/vans I have had sound broken when first started in te cold weather
Does it start easily without lots of cranking over ? |

no she starts first turn. All other "modern" diesels i know seem to be even running from the moment they start

Td5's are often a bit rough on cold start as they only have four glow plugs but five cylinders.

ah yes i'd forgotten about that. I seem to remember it being quite tricky to get the caps back on so not sure how hard they are to change

My golf tdi sounds very rattley when it first starts in the cold
Maybe its as broken as out defender lol |

Make sure you let it glow long enough. They are a bit lumpy as said because of the missing plug.

I do let the pre heat light go out before i start it. It must be down to a temp sensor I would have thought as it stays on for longer when it is cold.
I remember with a Tdi I had years ago you could give it a double blast of glowplugs but you can't do that with the Td5. I'll take them out and test them when I get a minute. It wouldn't surprise me if one or more of them is broken. My previous Td5 didn't have this problem so just made me wonder.... Dave |

Mine sounds like its running on 4 for a few seconds until compression starts the 5th when temps are below 3 degrees, i assumed the air temp sensor and or glow plugs need replacing 2004 TD5 Defender 90 xs station wagon

have you checked the flywheel sensor?? its just behind the started motor and if there is an issue with either the starter or the sensor the electronic interference can confuse the sensor

And it seems that the Td5 glowplugs fail pretty regularly.
I fitted 4 new ones into my 90 when I fitted the last head (about 4 or 5 months ago), when I changed the head (again...) last weekend, I metered the plug out, and 2 had failed (OK, they were cheapy eblag ones not genuine, whether there's a difference in quality) |

I had same problem here, but my "cold" starts goes around 30°C, so I think is not a weather thing. My problem was the no-return valve in the filter line. It was damaged and let small amount of pressure went during night (not enough for difficult start but enough for rough start first 5 seconds) letting some air to go in the lines. 10 pounds after and smooth as a baby...
