Hi Caterham Yep everything else is working fine, no lurching etc. its a good point you make and is probably just me. Ive not had a modern diesel with no sound proofing yet and am only judging the excess clatter based on the loan defender not having any and my mates with having a lot less. I researched old threads on here before posting and found that some clatter could be taken out with changing to better quality fuel - thats made no difference, then tried Lucas diesel additive to lubricate upper valve train - no difference and have finally brought some Millers Ecomax fuel additive as a lot of people swear this quietened the motor down. Ill let you know if that works?! Still going to book her in though just to be sure and its got a couple of other issues that need looking at. By the way anybody who uses Millers - its on offer at Opie Oils and you can use our club discount too |

good luck in resolving it one way or the other.
I've had 3 years of trying to track down that 'pinking' sound. there's been so many variables along the way I really don't know whats what anymore. I believe everything is pretty much as it should be and I still have the pinking sound which seems to vary for no obvious reason however I'm happy its within normal tolerances which I don't beleive it was before. |

Did the injector learn not work then? Trying to gauge what to expect based on your experience.

the injector learn so far as I'm concerned improved things but most certainly didn't make the engine silent.
so far as I'm concerned the noise went from a kind of 'loose' rattle to a more surgical / pricise rattle. this may be completely unrelated however you've mentioned the engine sounds fine while stationary you might just want to try loosening off the adjuster on the handbrake drum to ensure you've got some clearance (obviously marking the point its at presently first so it can be returned - might be a cmplete red herring but its easy to do) following my experiences (and I still don't knew for sure if I have an issue) I'd give all the wiring under the bonnet a gentle jiggle in case theres a wiring issue and remove and replace plugs ensuring they're all clean etc. and a check of the propshafts - do they have grease nipples and grease? |

It's all easy stuff and can be done in very little time so as far as I'm concerned it's worth doing / checking. Good luck and please keep us posted.

When we code injectors you have to do them in firing order not cyl order. 1342 so on programming screen 1=1,2=3,3=4,4=2 if that makes sense this is for 2.4 transit engine so guess it may be the same as puma.. Not sure if same on all machines
Seen people get this wrong few times.. |

Well the mechanic had a test drive and said it was completely normal. I used the demo model I had as a benchmark upon which he explained that too will become rattly when its done some more miles.
Its strange as the motor sounds very quiet when cold but when it gets to 45 DegC (Scanguage) it suddenly goes tappy like a switch has been turned on! During its next service it will have the injector relearn procedure carried out which the mechy said may help but not a lot. Until then..... |

In time you may succumb to the same engine up grades as myself manufactured by Dynomat and Focal......

One other thing I've been meaning to do is to get someone to drive mine past me while I'm outside cos everyone else's always sounds quieter from outside compared to mine inside
Might just give me piece of mind. |

Caterham
I used the car today and whilst driving I wondered what the rattle would sound like from outside as well. I lowered the window whilst it was rattling at its loudest and the noise dramatically reduced almost to the point that I could no longer hear it? I wasn't going very fast so wind noise etc was not really applicable in lessening the rattle. |

. all fixed then?
I have to cos my dad understand how it sounds so good from the outside but a bag of nails from the inside There's nothing like them......defenders. |
