Fitting rear sliding windows
Been thinking of fitting some rear sliding windows or Landyglass to my 90 due to the wife not liking having limited visibility when she drives my Defender for any reason
Questions...
1, If I fit rear windows, will it affect the class of vehicle - ie, I run it as a commercial on my company to get round benefit in kind, so will this change?
2, has anyone got and pictures of the inside after fitting either sliding windows or Landyglass? I've got wooden/carpeted panels with sound proofing in at the moment, I've seen plastic surrounds that you can buy from Masai after fitting sliding glass panels but they seem expensive

I can answer question 1.

Technically yes as it now has windows and that is one thing that would have allowed you to claim the vat back etc on purchase however as long as you do not put seats in the back I think you can still argue that it has not changed from being a commercial vehicle as no seats in the back - A 90 Station wagon is a car as it has rear windows & seats - see below

EIM23100 - Car benefit: meaning of car

Section 115(1) ITEPA 2003

A car is a mechanically propelled road vehicle that is not:
•a goods vehicle (a vehicle of a construction primarily suited for the conveyance of goods or burden of any description).
◦This will include most commercial vehicles such as lorries, pick-up trucks or vans. Estate cars will usually count as cars unless they have been permanently and substantially modified to change their construction to one primarily suited for the conveyance of goods or burden (see EIM23115 onwards). There is guidance on multi-purpose vehicles at EIM23145 and double cab pick-ups at EIM23150.
◦Note that the test is of construction, not use.
◦A vehicle that escapes from being a car for car benefit purposes by this route will be treated as a van (see EIM22700 for years from 2005/06 onwards and EIM22050 onwards for years to 2004/05) unless it is large enough to be a heavy goods vehicle (see EIM22300 onwards).

•a vehicle of a type not commonly used as a private vehicle and unsuitable to be so used.
◦This will obviously apply to a specialised vehicle, such as a bus. But it may also include outwardly conventional vehicles that have been modified in some way. Further guidance on this point is at EIM23125 onwards.
◦The benefit of the use of a vehicle that escapes from being a car for car benefit purposes by this route will be taxed under the general benefit rules on use of an asset (see EIM21615 onwards).

Sort of thought of doing the same for the same reasons but will probably wait & see how it goes as SWMBO drives it so rarely, daughter on other hand always wants to borrow it as its Cool Thumbs Up & never complains about not being able to see

It is a problem pulling out on roads when relying on mirrors when trying to join a motorway etc as quite a big blind spot especially if quite tall & seat right back ! 2020 P300 HSE

Brill, thanks pjb.

I love the way it looks at the moment being a 'van', we have 2 large dogs so we run my Defender and a Shogun commercial on our company 'cos it makes sense, the Shogun has windows in the back, admittedly they were solid black when I bought it but changed them to very dark tint, mainly so she can see what's coming.
If it's not going to change the class of vehicle from commercial to PLG then at least it's an option.

I'm doing this next month likely, before Xmas.

My reasons are reversing across the pavement into the busy- ish road at the ex's house and ventilation / condensation here in UK and later ventilation in Oz. For me .. the pavement.. I just want to see who's there.
I'll send before and after reports / photos if I figure out how to create use gallery (I'm old and new if that makes sense). Being Oz ified for the last 23 years I hadn't thought about bloomin' UK regs, we don't have MoT in Oz (except at point of sale) .. so thanks for the heads up about that pjb.

Else, it's a new truck for me (my other is in Oz) and about to be winterised for a stay in Chur. Slightly better lights, some insulation, take water out of brake fluid..! Winter tyres (ot of money)? Busy making a list.. Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...

Cheers pad, before and after pix would be great. I know what you mean about reversing out, it doesn't bother me but the wife just does not trust mirrors for some reason! Please let me know hot it goes. Cheers

I live on a very busy main road and have do option to drive in or I'd not get in at all. I purposely had my driveway entrance widened so I can reverse out at an angle halfway on the pavement or I'd not get out either. Even then you have to use 'bully boy tactics' to get into the flow of traffic quite often.

Back on topic there's an internal photo on the slideshow and a glimpse of the interior on the step by step fitting guide you could pause and look at......The Landyglass has 'dots' around the aperture which finishes it off nicely. Mine's in for some paintwork but I may be able to 'pm' you some photos later in the week. Gum has it fitted maybe drop him a pm.

My plan is to trim it somehow, but I really can't justify genuine CSW trim! I may carpet around the glas...

Gum, thanks you've saved me the bother. Probably better yours than mine as mine's a SW and I've obviously got the trim. A plus even I've found is that the vista is better and slightly larger than standard as you've no frames to worry about.

To the guys above that have the kit fitted, does the size and position of the opening match that in a CSW?? I have bought some new trims and want it to be as close as possible. Plus the figures on the Landyglass guide dont match?

I had the sliding windows in their frames removed from my SW and there was no cutting required the trim on the inside is fine. Drop Claire Wright a 'pm' all your queries will be answered.
