No argument from me whatsoever. As historically mentioned I did a lot of research phoning and discussing my needs with various suppliers of both remaps and intercoolers. I perhaps buy mistakenly under the principle 'You get exactly what you pay for.' As an engineer of 36 years I am able to recognise quality and that is what I purchased. Be interested in the link or info on the bad publicity. 'PM' will do if preferred. I do know Allisport had issues a while back that's why they pulled their e-bay ads and were struggling with recruitment of decent welders and that's why they dropped from my first choice. All sorted now I'm sure. think.
http://www.defender2.net/forum/post113756.html Irrespective of what one you go for I am sure if they're were any issues buying from a reputable, repected dealer these issues would undoubtedly rapidly disappear with the usual sterling service provided.......Quickly too. Ian, no offence taken. I was responding to Steve's post (no offence taken there either). I can only advise on my purchase and experiences which have with regards to intercoolers and remaps been very good.
Ultimately you buy what you deem is fit for your purpose and budget. Buy from Pete or Gary and you can't go wrong. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Our Ultimate Intercooler is the strongest available for Defender, and most efficient with its bar and plate core.
Manufactured in Germany, and backed with an unbeatable three year, new for old warranty against failure too. Fit and forget, that's how we like to do things at Alive. |

I'm sorry but I disagree with lots of the comments in this thread...
You can't just fit a different intercooler and hope for the best. The Air Path (i.e air intake, intercooler etc) should be a matched to the calibration to achieve volumetric efficiency based on the spec of the engine. This includes the intercooler and the exhaust as both affect the breathing capabilities of the engine. The exhaust for example will restrict how much of the air you are feeding the engine can be used. Any package should have a calibration to match it. I.e if you have a none standard intercooler and a none standard exhaust you should have a fully tested and developed calibration to match. Its not just a case of putting a calibration on and hoping for the best. This is where mixing an matching components from different suppliers is wrong. What you should have is a fully tested package. Where by you can stand with what you are going to get.
A bigger intercooler does not increase torque on 2.4L TDCi as this is controlled and monitored by the software torque control structure. Max torque (and max torque at different load points) will not change without changing the calibration... as it will always be capped/controlled by the ECU. If you gain torque by a bigger intercooler the engine is being over-fuelled. Both Transient and Steady State Torque is controlled... You might see a sudden spike in torque - but will be no more than a spike - the ECU will try and take control back regardless of what people have demanded in PW or Boost (which shouldn't be touched anyway - especially PW). Also... bigger isn't always better! Fitting components individually 'may' result in a gain - but it will not be an optimised gain. With regards to intercoolers - I've tried quite a few different suppliers - but always struggled to find one I'm happy with. In fact I have been horrified by what I have seen from a couple of manufacturers. One well know suppliers intercooler could have killed the engine! Hence why with all my conversions I only supply a PWR produced intercooler - made to my specification... and why I'm the only UK supplier from PWR europe. http://www.pwreurope.com/ PWR supply nearly every F1 team - for when F1 goes turbocharged next year... as well as most WRC teams, NASCAR teams etc etc. So not cheap cores or cheap tanks. But a properly designed and tested intercooler. Thanks mate.
And yes Gary and Pete have both been great with their help, and i will use them as a supplier. All i want from my defender is a good powerful and drivable vehicle that tows well for me while being as reliable as my old 300tdi HA HA HA .....(I WISH) Each and every person has their own preference to what they want from their car. I had a Rangie TD6 before that i loved and had for nearly 5 years and i just want some of the towing capabilities and ease of that. Ian 2008 TDCI 110 XS 1985 90 300tdi. Gone 2005 RR vogue TD6. Gone |

The quote below is from a historical thread which in turn has been edited but I think it is just as applicable today as it was a year ago yesterday perhaps?

The thing that still makes me laugh is the complete lack of proper testing and proof from some tuners/suppliers... and instead customers believe what they are told based on approximations... and hear say.
At the shows, the amount of people who tell me that they have 200bhp Puma Defenders - all based on what a tuning company has told them. Yet none of them have ever been near a rolling road and none of them have got proof of what has actually been done to their vehicles. The ones that simply have a new calibration - and suddenly they have 500bhp. I had a discussion with someone that was adamant that his Td5 made 250 bhp because the tuner had told him - yet it had never been proven. He didn't believe me when I said based on 'his' theory the 200tdi on my stand made 260bhp.... just because I said it has... And it goes well, so it must have. Without proof – hearsay and approximations mean nothing. Also, I hate this "all vehicles are different" - so some will be better than others line... With older engines this does apply to extent - but with a Tdci or newer it is simply not the case if the calibration has been done properly. Engine build tolerances are much tighter – as is the ECU control system. All vehicles are signed off on a +/-5% tolerance on declared power figures... and as such even when tuned you should still be within this percentage error. The other thing that bugs me (or ‘grinds my gears’ in a family guy stylee) is why when talking about diesels especially everyone is so caught up with BHP. Torque is much more important factor – both max torque, and torque delivery across the RPM range. Rant over lol. Not Diesel related but a similar comparison perhaps?
As a motorcyclist I agree totally that torque is the overriding factor. Look at Ducatti motorcycles World Leaders in their class for many, many years. Lower BHP in comparison to other motorcycles but with the large-displacement V-twin engines the motorcycles became renowned for their phenominal torque and as a result World class-winning capability.
