there was talk when replacing dual mass with solid flywheels in transits .. the solid ones weren't not for transit gearboxes .. maybe why some defenders are getting problems with gearboxes .. I KNOW duel mass flywheels have problems .. but I would rather replace a flywheel than gearbox cost wise
I would guess it take a lot of rattle out of drivetrain.

Would need to be matched to the drivetrain installation, not as easy as just fitting a Transit DMF - it could easily make vibration worse.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

whats different in drive train .. Im sure box is the same .. so same length input shaft same spline and transit engine the same .. crank pick up in same place.. when you replace transit dmf with solid you have to fit complete (flywheel, pressure plate and centre plate ) for solid flywheel.. bearing is the same ..so why wont dmf with correct clutch for dmf fit .

I'd have thought the defender's drivetrain has enough non-purpose designed parts in it without introducing more!

Seriously though, the tdci isn't the greatest drivetrain (you can say that again) but if the clutch, gbox, propshaft, UJs etc are in good enough nick then the backlash shouldn't be too severe. Cheers, David

if your talking about non purpose parts .. then they should not have a solid flywheel as the transit engine and gearbox were designed to have a DMF ..
if we get transit in for clutch and needs a new DMF then that's what it gets .. only ones we fit solid to are for the people we know wont pay for dmf
just because dmf are not std fitment does not mean it might be better with it ..if that's the case why do we have remaps and bigger intercoolers there non std
and why do they say solid is worse for gearbox .. looking at reports of gearbox problems on forum .. transits don't seem to suffer the same problems and most transits we do are for very bad drivers

The Transit DMF will most probably fit the Defender engine and gearbox.
But that doesn't mean that it matches the drive train of the Defender.

The inertia of a Defender drive train is much higher than that of a transit (bigger and heavy wheels, 4wd + transferbox) and torsional stiffness is different. Dynamics of the drive train determine the design of the DMF.
If you want a proper DMF it must be engineered specifically for the Puma. Joost

The inertia of a Defender .. inertia the power used to change motion of given object .. engine power is used to change motion on drive train... the engine puts out same power what ever drive train its connected to (lighter drive train transit motion changed faster ,defender heavier slower still the same power ... meaning the load on over run ... then that's the same... as the flywheel is the last bit before engine .. does not take any more to turn defender engine than transit engine on overrun . if your talking power going through flywheel then don't they fit the 3.2 tdci with DMF

My tdci has the a dual mass fly wheel fitted as it was intended for a transit and I don't have any problems with it although I would probly change to solid if I did I know a common fault when they start breaking up is that the starter stop working as it is blocked with debris
Yests on my 3.2 but I doubt it's that different

You can keep your Transit DMF. Had a transit with one of those fitted, did 40k miles and it started to suffer from an intermittent starter issue. Took it back to Fords who replaced starter. Fine for a while then same symptoms again. This time Ford identified, what they told me was a common issue on TDCI Transits, DMF breaking up and dust from such fouling starter motor.

Ill stick with the Defenders one at present.
