2.2 Running In & Service
Good morning everyone - two questions, one there is no mention of any running-in precautions in my new 2.2 110's handbook - do any of you run-in gently or just get on and use normally?

And two - there is also no mention of a service prior to the first 12k service in ether the hand book or the service book (which is not really a service book as it states the history is now on-line...) I find it odd that land rover do not think it a good idea to have the oil and filter changed after 1,000 miles or so as always used to be the case - what are your thoughts?

No running in required , just get on and drive . Service intervals - Landrover as with all manufacturers give rediculasly long service intervals with some first at 60000 miles ? However you as the LR owner should know better . For 25 yrs and 14 LRs i have done a service every 4-5000 miles , simple , inexpensive and so beneficial . Any engineer worth their salt will tell you the same .

The oils are better quality these days but I have to say, having dipped mine at 1500miles, its black as soot. Feels wrong to go 12k! Gearbox is 60k I believe? 1951 80" S1 2.0

Gearbox is 120k, even my local dealers service manager believes that this too high.

Having said that, a friend works for a independant lubrication testing firm and states that the new oils are easily capable of the mileages stated, I have just done an oil and filter change and have to say the new oil looks like watered down cold tea. You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

Running-in and an early oil change were due to cylinder bore machining and metal particles being shaved off the bores in early engine life. Modern manufacturing processes (plateau honing) remove the need for this requirement. My Disco 'best bits'

The procedure that I'd always do is let it get upto temperature before work. Our excavators, tractors and vehicles all get treated the same and when we have come to change them the dealers are always surprised that they run sweet still.

I share your thoughts Rick, and changed my oil and filter after the first 3,000 miles for my own peace of mind, Used LR filter and oil from Opie as it's half price for the same thing.
Being a bit of an anorak, (as we all are on here), I always change engine oils and filters halfway between service intervals whatever vehicle they are in, needless to say, never had any engine problems with anything.

Thank you all for the info. John - that is pretty much what mi intension was, I thought I would change the oil and filter at 1500 and then again at 5000 then change on the 5000 thereafter. What oil is meant to go in the 2.2's? The handbook just says 5-30 castrol but there are several and I had read on here that Edge is the one for the 2.2's as it is fully synthetic?

Hi Rick,
Opie oils will confirm exactly what oil to use but fyi the oil I bought from them was Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Low SAPS Engine Oil -2 X 5 Litres.
You may get some Defender site discount.
Cheers,

I totally subscribe to your thinking about letting an engine thoroughly warm up before asking it to do some really hard work for you. It can be interesting to monitor how the coolant can achieve its normal working temperature quite a while before the oil reaches its normal working temperature.
