Just had the IAM Surety scheme on the 'phone who stuck to their word about beating my best quote. Fully Comp now looks like £278 for the year, less than I pay for my 55 plate! Chris

Loads of cheap policies out there for a DC - try Diamond, Elephant, Admiral - all came up under £200 using Moneysupermarket.com and playing with the voluntary excess.
In the end I went with LV as they offered new vehicle if stolen within first 12 months. |

Moneysupermarket? Doesn't recognise the DCPU, wants to call it an estate. Won't let me add all my modifications i.e. Roof rack, hard top, awning, roof tent etc.
Comparison sites just aren't designed for Defenders with expensive additions. I much prefer to speak to a real person and confirm all the details are correct before getting a quote Chris |

I'm sure I selected all the closest options, got the quotes and then made a phone call to LV to confirm the details.
However, i didn't have any accessories fitted then, so I do need to call them and ensure extra bits are covered. I think you can contact Customer Services on: Mon-Fri 8am-9pm, Sat 8am-5pm, Sun 9am-5pm 0845 640 5266 |

You could try Academy Insurance in Staines - they specialise in 4x4 and insured our Utility when I was having hassles getting quotes.

The saga continues...
Following the addition of our new site sponsor, A-Plan, I gave them a call for a quote. A standard DCPU XS with my details comes in around £200 FC. When I add my specific list of extras, totalling around £10,000, the quote increases to £490 FC. I called LV back and asked them to be completely clear on how they wanted the additions declaring - a full list at start of policy or receipts for fitted items in the event of a claim? Also, if the vehicle was stolen in 2 years time, obviously I would get "book price" for a replacement vehicle. What would happen to my Trojan Back, Patriot Rack, roof tent etc. in terms of value? Replacement value I wondered? L&V said that they would need a full list of all mods before hand. More alarmingly they said, and I quote, "we would indemnify you and provide you with a replacement vehicle as it was when stolen / written off." When pressed, she said that they couldn't provide specifics as the claim "hadn't happened yet." Clearly the concept of hypothetical questions has passed them by. Bottom line, I'm personally unconvinced by L&V's answers and will not be using them. Yes, it may save me £200 this year, but I'm sure I wouldn't sleep worrying about what would happen in the event of a claim. A-Plan on the other hand have been great. I spoke to Robin in the Milton Keynes office who was efficient, knowledgable and called back when he said he would. I asked him to pursue the underwriters regarding replacement value of mods - they would provide like for like replacements, possibly to an agreed value. Like so many things, you definitely get what you pay for it seems. Clearly I haven't claimed so I can't test the policy but so far A-Plan have been the most convincing and knowledgable company I've spoken to. Just got off the 'phone having spoken to Steve Marsh, who manages the MK office. He's certainly put mu mind at rest regarding a bespoke quote and service should the worst happen. Certainly worth a 'phone call as they do understand Defenders and, more importantly, modifications Chris |

Essentially they're saying that they will replace the mods as they were when written off / stolen, which is fair enough. They would then have to apply a depreciation factor to the new cost of each mod. As we all know that's very much dependent on condition of the item.
At no point did they request pictures of current condition, proof of fitment, source of parts, cost etc. Unlike A-Plan, who would prefer the standard 6 photos, copies of receipts etc. I just feel that for those of us running heavily modified and expensive vehicles, we really need to take the time to record all of our expensive extras and understand what will happen in the event of a claim. Most of the non-specialist companies I've spoken to have merrily cantered through the extras with a "don't worry, we believe you, it'll be alright" attitude. Anyone who's ever had a claim knows that this probably won't be the case when dealing with assessors and claim departments. As an aside, Steve at A-Plan suggested I e mail him the spreadsheet I have with all mods, suppliers and costs on so they can see exactly what was on there. I even asked if he thought I should declare the Nakatenenga stainless bolt kit? He replied, yes, of course, at £100! Chris |

I know I'm behaving like an old lady and I'm very fortunate never to have had to claim personally but I've seen what happens to friends and family who thought they were covered.
The world of mod'ed Defenders is normal to us and we understand the language. Try telling a young lass in a call centre you've got a tent on your car and you can hear the finger describing circles next to her temple Anyway, A-Plan all the way for me, just need to take delivery and bolt the bloomin' thing together now Chris |
