Well, I got the rear storage about 3 weeks ago, the day before we set off on our road trip.
I ended up using 15mm ply for the tops and 12mm for the sides/bottom. I made it so that if I needed I could remove the centre section and have full height from floor to roof, probably will never to but its done if I do. I carpeted it so that if removed it still is finished What isn't carpet, is painted.......OCD I settled on using 4 of the Wolf pack boxes as I liked the ease of use, being able to remove to pack and use on site, and also to use the empty space for other stuff when not travelling/camping, for example our overnight bags fit under there neatly. I utilised the Boab tie down rails, the piccies show 3 but there is now 4 fitted evenly across, I had made provision for the 4th when making it. The side boxes are bolted down through the seat belt mounts and the seat pivot mounts. The side tracks bolt though the lot and the wheel box with large pan washers underneath. The main centre box is mounted through the sides into the captive nuts from the seat pivots. I don't think any of it would move if the unimaginable happened. I also fitted a rear door gas strut. Well here are some pics to prove it happened Click image to enlarge Last edited by Cracka on 7th Oct 2013 8:39pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Thanks adafish, no, not stretchy at all. It's an auto carpet, basically marine carpet glued down with contact glue.

Looking good, very neat and tidy job...
We avoided using any wood in ours - for 2 reasons - its heavy and bulky and takes up space and also getting it through Australian quarantine! So we've decided. go with stacking the wolf boxes next to the fridge and tying everything down to the tie down strips on the floor of the tub. So many ways of doing these things, even with the tiny space of a 90! One thing though, you may wish to consider if you haven't already done so - on the safety side - is fitting some sort of cargo barrier between the back and the front... we have a dog guard (some people use a net....whatever you use it needs to work) so that if anything in the storage area does come loose or breaks it isn't going to be travelling forwards at a rate of knots into the back of your heads.. It also means you don't need to tie down absolutely everything as it will be restricted in how far it can move. ... also gives an extra attaching point... We will have a hi-lift and possibly ground anchor attached to ours! Keep the updates coming and as said before... maybe see you out there! Thank you all for the comments
Pamw, I had considered the cargo barrier but it just becomes a nuisance for me for everyday living. I strap everything down hence the 4 rails. I just did a 4000km trip around Victoria, the country side is looking brilliant at the moment, hopefully it still will be when you are here. Tiger, the first layer is Stinger Roadkill, the same thing as Dynamat. |
