A lot of our local Land Rovers have pretty serious reversing cameras.

They aren't in to the "landy wave" much.

So the front air vents have been compromised by all that armour, outrageous.

What a complete waste of a Landy - what is wrong with those guys?

Why not just get a REAL police car? Like this one -

The steering wheel is on the wrong side, but the main drawback is not being able to easily pull people in the back doors to give them a kicking.

That's not a one off car, there are literally hundreds of them on our streets at times, so they need to be relatively affordable.

I thought that it was very appropriate use of a vehicle called a "Defender".

Check out "Marauder" - made in South Africa. Most models have the wheel on "the right side" and there are two great big doors aft for access. The vehicle displayed is for the "foreign" market Arrow

If you're going to go into places which needs all that armour on a Defender, well then you are going to regret going in on the cheap because it will cost you more in the long run.

...and besides, when I served in similar vehicles, it was usually the boys with the blue lights on their vehicles who got the "kicking" - Twisted Evil ****CENSORED****

The rear "hatch" on the Marauder is over a metre off the ground, maybe practical for loading shopping, but a bit of a pain when trying to get someone vigorously resisting arrest in to the back.
They would need to down size their fleet by almost 75% (to be cost neutral) and accept that in riot situations they couldn't practically get in or out of vehicles (in full riot gear), nor could they practically take people in to custody. These are vehicles used on a daily basis and have to be a compromise. They also have to drive round the roads and streets of Northern Ireland ( A fairly rural part of the world).
Years ago we did have Pigs and Saracens on the streets so appropriate vehicles were used when required.

Here's an example of the cost and practicality benefit:

5 Land rovers make a nice rolling road block, since we can only afford one of the Marauders for that money, the road wont be blocked and we can only bring 10 men to the party instead of 30.

Horses for courses.
