I had the same on my 300tdi, it turned out to be the front pulley tensioner, could also check the aux belt for damage

Take off the serpentine belt and then you can spin the tensioer pulley by hand and listen for any grumbling/sqeaking etc or see if there is any lateral movement in the pulley by holding it and trying to move it back and to. Without any load it may seem smooth and quiet - depends how bad it is.

Sometimes even a pefectly serviceable or brand-new belt & tensioner will make the same noise.
I have had this off & on since brand-new (300TDi) and also since replacing the belt & tensioner with (genuine Dayco) replacements at service intervals. More often than not it is silent but occasionally it makes the noise especially if it has been parked up for a few days. You can confirm if it is the belt / tensioner by the old trick of sprinkling some French Chalk or talc on the belt, if that stops it then you have identified the cause of the noise. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |
