07 Defender 110 Transmission and AC Questions
Greetings from Dubai,

I just purchased an '07 Defender 110, and have been enjoying the truck quite a bit. However, I have a bit of a problem... I've done the searches already, and I've seen what was written on the 07 Puma clutch issue. I hate to retread somewhat old ground, but can someone help out a newbie on this issue?

Like many, I have a slight clunking sound if I don't let up on the clutch slowly during gear shifts. Otherwise the gear changes seem ok, but not as crisp as a TD5. The clutch engages rather low in the pedal travel, and the shifts are fairly smooth. However, on a couple of occasions, I have heard this rather strange, rapid clicking noise. It's not as low as a clunk; it's a bit higher pitched and has a pretty fast paced beat. I heard it in the background as the car was driving on the highway once, and it can get pretty loud at idle now and then. On one occasion, it didn't go away until I restarted the car. On another occasion, when I hit the clutch, the sound went away instantly. Does anyone have an idea what this could be? Perhaps, I'm being paranoid, but is it the dreaded clutch issue?

For your reference, the truck has about 36k miles, and it's already had one clutch replacement in late '08. I'm not sure if the truck was upgraded to the new clutch though.

On a separate note, does everyone smell a bit of diesel when they turn on their AC systems in either the fresh air or recirulated air mode? I'm just wondering if this is one of the quirks that I'm going to have to live with.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hello, welcome!

Plenty of people on here have experience with the clutch 'issues', so sure help will be along shortly. I've definately never smelt any fuel when aircon switched on! Sounds like something not right there....can't think what though, I'm afraid Confused Mark

There are several issues with the clutch in the defender, I personally haven't come across one yet but my gearbox does rattle when in gear five which I need to get checked. Whistle

Now regarding the AC turned on and the smell of diesel is something new. I haven't come across this, I just noticed your from dubai, problem with the AC is that its really cools for 30 mins but then suddenly the airflow becomes less cooler for another 20 mins and then its back to freezing again. Summers can be terrible driving in the defender but I think I don't have any tints on my car so they make a difference I guess. I would you get that checked with Al Tayer, you don't want to be breathing diesel fumes.

I assume you have less than a year for warranty so a good idea would be to get it checked before the warranty ends. '08 LR Defender 110

Thanks to both of you. It appears that i definitely have a bit of an AC problem. The sad thing is that the seller just took it into the dealership last week for the 60k km service, and the Defender got a thumbs up all around. Go figure.

Woah 60k service, I haven't even done 20k yet! I don't know who you are dealing with at Al Tayer but if you like I can lead you to an excellent service adviser? '08 LR Defender 110

Welcome!

Just had mine in at Al Tayer in Dubai with a tinny vibration from the clutch and a clunk on all but the most delicate of gear changes. Diagnosis was defective springs on the clutch plate causing the slop when drive was taken up. It was dealt with very quickly under warranty.

Not much help with regards your AC problem other than to say it doesn't sound very normal.

Dear LRDXB110,

Yes, a referral to a service advisor that you like would be great. Do you go to the Garhoud or Al Quoz location?

With respect to the AC issue you mentioned, I seem to recall reading somewhere that evaporators can freeze up, which in turn causes the AC to stop working for a while. A potential fix is to get the temperature sensor or thermostat adjusted.

Dear Martin,

If I do have a clutch problem, it's comforting to know that filing a successful warranty claim is a real possibility. If you have a service advisor to recommend as well, I'm all ears.

Thanks again. I hope that I get to meet you both sometime.

I have sent you a PM, all the necessary details are in there. Any trouble, give me a shout.

Regarding the AC I haven't made a complaint since its my weekend car but I ll speak to my service advisor when my car goes in next month for its service. I have a toyota landcruiser pick up as my work vehicle. The toyota is a daily driver and the defender is something special just for the weekends. Mr. Green

Yeh don't worry Al Tayer will let you claim warranty where its required just make sure you know what is covered under warranty and what is not. '08 LR Defender 110

Hi there,

I have an early 2007 model probably one of the first off the line, 48k (miles) and no transmission problems at all.
Treat them like a women, they need lots of TLC and a nice smooth driver! Look after them and they'll look after you Thumbs Up
