2005 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green
New type approval for ESC came in 2011, 2014 is I understand for all new vehicles

New type date for AEBS and LDW is 1st Nov 2013, again 2015 date is for all new as I understand, although there are exemptions groups listed.

I'd always assumed the lack of DRL's was to do with them now being classified as commercial vehicles. A bit like the lack of high level brake lights in hard tops ? Darren

The Defender is not a 'New Vehicle" Thumbs Up

They are referring to newly designed vehicles Thumbs Up

Hi Andrew

For ESC, as stated before it has two dates, one for new type approval and one for all new cars registered. As of 1st November 2014, all new vehicles registered in the respective vehicle categories will have to have ESC fitted. These include M1G and N1G which LR's range are in. This includes the Defender. So all new EU registered Defenders after this date will have to have ESC fitted.

It's not exactly clear which categories are covered by the AEBS and LDW regulations and I can't be arsed to look, so not sure if these will apply or not. But again they have two dates. Earlier one for new type approval and later one for new registered.

I hope this is clear

Cheers

Steve

You have to wonder why they need to include all this tech in new cars, can nobody drive properly anymore?

Actually I think I just answered my own question didn't I...

Rolling with laughter
Funnily enough I find indicators useful sometimes as my left arm is not quite long enough to reach out through the passenger side door window. That was the reason I went for electric windows in the Puma but I've no choice but to use the indicators instead. Laughing
Then there's the Mrs. Everytime I stuck my left arm out to try to indicate she thought I was hiding her face from on coming traffic. You can guess how indignant she was, so I'm glad I ordered the indicators as an extra. Imagine my shock when I was told that they came as a standard fitment. There's nothing basic about these Defenders no matter what people say. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Same here when I found that the Puma had a heater that worked, I still refuse to use it though, preferring to drive wearing a big coat and gloves. And occasionally spraying the inside of the windscreen with water to simulate condensation.
Oh and don't get me started on the lack of wind noise in the Puma Evil or Very Mad

On my short drive to work on a cold morning I get next to no warmth from the heater, and the windscreen fogs up sometimes too.

Its almost like driving a real Landrover sometimes... Rolling with laughter

On a more serious note, I can see the point of indicators and a decent heater, but all these acronyms they are adding now - well we have been driving cars for decades without them, is this just another EU rule for the sake of having a rule? They are all yet another thing to go wrong. Also, as a commercial vehicle driver, why does my life matter less than a car driver? Took a brand new Merc Axor out the other day, no airbags, no nothing...seems a bit odd that cars have to all x y and z fitted to be legal but lorries can have...well, some tyres and a steering wheel. And a cab if we are lucky.

Driving standards are getting worse it would seem but they are still passing people who cannot drive properly...it seems all this kit is designed to make the driving experience less and less engaged with what is actually going on. 2011 110 USW

Modern driving == TV. It's only a hop and a skip from lane awareness to fly by wire automated driving on rails (ok, I trivialise it a bit) but that's where I assume we're headed.

Imagine the hike in insurance when everyone else is automated. "What - you drive it _yourself_?" 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

“is this just another EU rule for the sake of having a rule?”

No, it’s another EU rule voted for by UK MEPs under instruction from/in consultation with the UK Government.

Easier to blame “Brussels” though, in the same way that a tax office in Glasgow is responsible for increasing income tax and those overpaid, unelected Welshocrats in Swansea are to blame for some of us having to pay four hundred quid VED.
