Hi Guys,

Just back from a month's trip to Southern Spain, 6 adults, probably 250kg on the roof, in my Defender, she did 2030 miles, never missed a beat and used no oil, we experienced temperatures exceeding 42 degees C ( well thats when my Lidle OAT gauge gave up Cool.

We had been given the use of an apartment by a friend but camped on the way down and back to Santander. We used a Landie Tent, an RV4 Oztent and a £25 Tesco cheapie. All performed well, but we were really impressed with the Oztent, so simple, it really is a matter of minutes to put it up/down, it's only downside is the weight, whereas I can put it up/down on my own it takes 2 to get it on/off the roof rack. The Landie tent was also quick and easy, actually probably faster than the Oztent if you ignore the pegs! The Tesco tent, well a simple 3 man mini dome tent, took about 5 mins to get up down, the storage bag was too small to re-pack and the zip broke, but it was only £25!

Chris

Just a thought about getting the Oztent on the roof single-handed; I call it my "Tossing the Caber" method.

1. Lean the bagged Oztent vertically against the side of the car (top of the tent resting on the side of the roofrack)
2. Grab the bottom of the tent with both hands. Pull it away from the vehicle while sliding it up over the lip of the rack
3. As the tent gets past its tipping point, swing it sideways until it lands in the rack basket.
4. Adjust position and tie down.

Hope this makes sense. Sorry about the drawings!
Regards

Before I got an Ozpod, I fitted some L shaped brackets to a set of roof bars so that I could throw the tent on from the side without it shooting straight across the roof:

It worked well, but the Ozpod is easier as you just poke the tent in from the end:

Hi Tarrell,

Thanks for the advice, I'm sure I'm just being a wimp Big Cry

BTW you've got a great future as an artist Very Happy

LandRover Anorak,

Looks like it would be useful for bars (is that a disco??) but I've got a full roof rack so it wont fall off.

Yeah, it was a DII. We used it and an Oztent for a tour of southern Spain a couple of years ago:

The brackets weren't supposed to stop the tent falling off as such. Just to stop it sliding across the roof and out of easy reach for strapping it down. Darren

It's amazing what technology can do. I'm on a business trip and was sitting at the desk in my hotel room. Just roughed up some sketches on an A4 pad, snapped a pic with the ipad, then uploaded it!

FWIW, I've also seen roof bars with a roller attachment (I think Rhino Rack do them - designed for vans), which would make it easier to push the Oz onto the roof from the back of the vehicle. 2012 Defender Utility Wagon

My Ozpod, shown above, has a roller built into the rear edge for exactly that reason Thumbs Up Darren

Darren,

Is the Ozpod a type of roof box? , when I saw your pics I thought it was a roof tent?

Hi Chris,

Yes, it's basically a long, thin roof box, sized to take two tents side by side. The clever bit is that it's accessed by a door at the read end, which means that the end of tent can be offered up and fed in without having to lift fully up onto the roof. It also means no faffing about with straps and offers a degree of security. Darren
