Bolt or rivet a new mudguard to a trailer?
Unfortunately I need to fit a new mudguard to my IWT P5e. The old one was riveted in place -- and I'm wondering if it's easier just to bolt the replacement on than rivet it, if only because I've never riveted anything before.

From what I've read here having different metal types in contact is a bad idea because it speeds up rusting. It's an aluminium bodied trailer; is it just daft idea to use steel bolts to hold the new mudguard on with, long term?

Is it a better idea to just try something new and rivet the new mudguard into place?

This all assumes that I can drill/punch the old rivets out first Smile

I realise it's a newb question -- but then it's my first proper post too Smile Thanks for any advice. 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

Riviting is an easy job, nothing to be worried about. As you said just drill the old rivits through the centre using a small drill to start with to weaken the wall and allow them to collapse easier, then increase the drill bit size to something like a 10mm to take the head off, then get a punch and knock them through. Get your riviting kit and attach your new mudguard.

Regards,

Mark

Assuming you are replacing a mudguard that has failed - can you get to both sides of the rivet - if so I'd upgrade to a nut and bolt.

In either case consider fitting a large repair or penny washer on the topside. Most mudguard failings I've seen are because air gets into the guard at speed and forces the material upwards - the securing force of a small rivet head fails sooner rather than later.

I am replacing one that's failed. In this case, it failed because it was used as a step by one of the kids to climb onto the hardcover. Great fun but Mad

Thanks for the tip Thumbs Up 2009 110 XS Station Wagon
