best diff guard
Hi I have rover axles with their notoriously weak diff pans. Which type of guard is best, a bolt on wrap round type or the clamp type? It's not an issue as such for normal farm jobs but when I can I do like to go rock driving when it can be an issue without a spotter.

Any thoughts. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

There are many different makes and prices vary from just over about a tenner ech to well over £100. Some are UK made some European others rest of the world.

Wrap around type? Some people argue that they can be pulled off. Have used them for years and never lost one yet.

Dependent on type some have a more open 'mesh' type whilst others are more enclosed. The more enclosed ones some people argue that they will cause diff pan to rust through due to more trapped mud/water. Have never experienced that.

Skid plate type? Goes under diff and does reduce ground clearance under diff. Some people argue that the skid plate allows it to ride over obstacles easier.

I would suggest you avoid the cheap end of the range as they will be thinner/lighter then the others and may not offer as good protection as the others.

Currently I have the bolt on £25 ones which do the job. But I will be looking at the QT's soon though more protection more heavy duty and better looking Cool TheThunder RollsπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

I have the QT ones front and rear on my 90 and they look like pretty good bits of kit. Been on for a few years and no rust or other deterioration, they wrap around below the diff so looked to me like they might provide more protection than the circular ones. The circular ones look like they might only be effective if you hit something in reverse , as there is nothing towards the front (of the rear diff).

But hey , what do I know, except that I haven't suffered any damage despite some quite rocky tracks in Lakes and Spain, good spotting has helped I think.

Yes I agree. The front protects in forward motion and but not the rear and the rear is protected in reverse but not the front.
Saying that never had any issues either but also never been bit either. I think the QT's have better protection all around myself especially from underneath where most hits would occur.

I prefer this type myself but not sure modern Pumas have enough nose for the saddle bracket to fit. Anyone recognise the make?

The QT type bracket allows forces from any bump to transfer directly to the diff casing as point loadings or worse still side loadings on a few of studs/bolts.

The QT diff guard for the rear incorporates a wrap around guard which protects the diff pan and has a 'rock slide' to the front also. All in one. Similar to above without the clamp.
The clamp on type guards for the rear IMO don't offer much protection at all unless your reversing. TheThunder RollsπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

I think you are right about the these clamp on guards:

but that type of fixing is used on other guards, and that actual type of fixing seems better to me than bolting directly to the diff.

I can't help thinking the lower cradles of the QT guard looks like they would have the same effect as a bolster chisel when hitting a rock hard.

The QT's are quite rounded and smoothed off though which the clamp on one's most certaily aren't so a hit would most likely be deflected and slid over than simply smashed into by the clamp on. Not to mention the lower section of the axle is un-protected completely. TheThunder RollsπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Dave just put some Gwyn Lewis weld-on ones on my 90 last week, painted up in black.

Not blingy looking like a lot of the others mentioned above, but cheap and cheerful and tried and tested in extreme off-road situations on our Challenge Defender, with no issues at all. 6mm galv or mild steel, so up to the job. Easy access for diff/axle maintenance etc.

Fit and forget.
