Battery terminals
i notice recently doing a few things with my 90 Puma that on both battery terminals both positive + and negative - that the clamps do fit nicely however you can simply remove the clamps from the battery posts by hand. Now i know these should be firmly clamped with the bolt already there and only removeable with a spanner but the bolts/nuts are already as tight as possible why do you think this may be? i haven't had any problem but just thinking if one of them became loose would cause problems

I had an intermittant starting problem which i eventually traced back to a loose battery lead. If it's slack nip it up a bit just incase. 130 crew cab

After i tightened mine they would't turn anymore. I'd take them off to check they are not dammaged or fitted incorrectly. 130 crew cab

The battery posts should be slightly tapered. Loosen the clamps a tad, tap them down gently, then retighten them. Should do the trick.

Should there be no spare thread capacity on the bolt surely a couple of strategically placed washers should do the trick nicely! Also clean the grease/vaseline off of the terminal to give the clamp more purchase. Basic engineering, if this couldn't have been fathomed out yourself get an engineer or mechanic to do it before you do yourself an injury. Elf and safety!

I've had a problem with both previous Defenders,, particular the - neg terminal, and a slack fit
both being replace with a conventual bolt type terminal, with space for extra leads eg Front winch etc California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

TJ101,

Dito. Did you keep the huge ANL fuse on the positive terminal? Dealer said to me removal of the 500amp would kill the warranty if removed.

undone tigtening bolts yesterday on both terminals with much effort! Shocked and with use of hammer just lightly tapped the lead down then tapped the terminals down onto that then tightened them. sorted Very Happy maybe this will stop them nearly coming off whilst driving along Embarassed
