Find out if the University uses specific computers/software, so you can ensure your new laptop is compatible.
Failing that, buy an Apple MacBook using Apples education discount scheme, which not only reduces the price, but gives you their 3yr Apple Care (warranty) as well.

That's what I did (and I'm not even a student!).

Once you e got an Apple computer, you will thank yourself.

Thanks guys.

I do not yet know the ins and outs of the course, but I do not imagine there will be anything too extreme program wise.

I am looking for something to do reports assignments etc and surf the net for research etc. So general computing.

Hopefully once I get my student card there may be some discounts available - just doing my research now, so I know what I am looking for and can snap up any bargains.

Warpig - I think an apple would be out my budget range- i know how good the are, in my current job we have gone totally mac over the last couple of years, and once you haev your head round they way they work they are good. But so far I have been stubborn and even avoided an iPhone so as not to "conform" Smile

Is an iPad realistically feasible?

I have only really used one for emails and surfing the net etc.

Yes it is. I only use my laptop for expenses and some intranet VPN only tasks, other than I fully use iPads for everything else and I'm a heavy user.

Can you really produce reports etc to the same standard as something with MS Office? and is it comfortable to use?

Yes, the Apple is iWork sophisticated enough and compatible with MS Office. You also have the choice to use online services like cloudon and parallel as an option. Personally I prefer the native apps

Comfort wise there is no issue with iPad and keyboard for long periods of typing. It's much easier to use an iPad for things like PowerPoint than a laptop, and quicker too. I have two iPad's a 10" and a 4G mini for when I'm mobile.

You have all the apps at your disposal and best platform for surfing and research in my opinion. So personally if it was a choice over just one device I'd easily pick an iPad over laptop.

Very much a personal choice though.

Windows8 - takes about 20 minutes to get used to and they are putting the start button back sometime in August

So it's not as bad as all the reports

Have a go with it in pc world ?
