I will be there tomorrow, and looking forward to it. Today was a good day for post. First I opened the packet with my Defender2.net t-shirt Cool and then the envelope with my 2 free day passes Very Happy

Just have to get up early tomorrow Sad

We won't be in my Defender or Dad's Disco..... Too many thieving scumbags there so Mum's freelander will do just fine.

Popped along to Eastnor today given weather forecast improved. It was great to see loads of land rovers but for me the event was low key and lacked both quantity and quality with no compensation in terms of atmosphere.

There were far less trade stands than normal - compared to similar events - both for new and second hand gear. Sorry Eastnor but this coupled to low attendance and some poor organisation (the center arena seemed dis organised) means I would think twice before attending again. Sweatysock

I was there today too, and WAY better than the last time I was there. But last time was torrential downpours and the site was like a swamp so not hard to beat!

I agree with sweaty, it was smaller, but in ways that is nicer- it was good to actually get to talk to a few people without another 10 people at the same time.

Was also good to bump into a fellow overlander at the show who I last saw in Italy last month..... What were the chances!

Second hand stands were a joke. I swear that they just take the same stock back to the shows every year so it is always the dregs that are on show. Actual companies were lacking in numbers (only one or 2 big ones).

As above- the centre ring was a complete joke!! It was like a bunch of people who just met at a pay and play and having a mess around. I only really paid attention at the twist-off, WHY in the name of Zeus' butthole did they get a girl who wouldn't know a Land Rover from a slug to commentate? (or if she did she was acting dumb).

All in all I am glad I went- had a good time even though it was too cold to show off my D2 t-shirt..... Time to get Hoodies and jumpers made up Smile. Maybe if I paid for the tickets I would have been more disappointed.

I'm going tomorrow, the weather is bound to be better than last year.......that thunderstorm on the Saturday was something to see! I was camped up on the higher part of the site, something that I was quite glad about at least it was only water running through the pitch not mud.
I've noticed that pretty much all shows have become a little stale, many stands have gone by the wayside, the autojumble is a joke, as been mentioned before what is on offer is hawked round every show, the ring attractions consist of the bloke with the ducks being herded round with a collie or two. The twist off ramp makes an appearance, the clubs take a trip round the ring and that's pretty much it.
Well Smartarse, I hear you say, what do you suggest to do.
There is no magic formula to get people to attend any event, the only thing you can hope to do is to provide something that a majority will be willing to make an effort to see. There is a fanatical obsession with Land Rovers, we all like nothing better than to walk round and look at other peoples motors, we are all intrigued by others modifications whether to your taste or not. I'm believing that by just having a "Gathering" is becoming more popular, perhaps mild greenlaning trips, I would like to see gymkhana style events for "normal" people to try. This type of gathering is getting quite popular on a small scale, there have been such events organised within this forum, I and a couple of other members on here go to one at Bala, we've not long come back from our main annual meet up which this time was for 10 days.
Land Rovers bring all types of people together from many different places, our last one had a lad from Belgium, one from Scotland others from Yorkshire, Sussex, Leicestershire, from all over. I've been to Convoy 4 Heroes every year since its start 3 years ago, the atmosphere is really really friendly, hardly any trade stands(mainly as the traders feel that the event is not worth them attending as there won't be any customers) but would have been an excellent oppotunity for getting there name about. The only downside to the past two years holding the event Easter weekend has been our great British weather! last year was one of the wettest weekends, this year one of the coldest. I had readings of -8.7'C on the Saturday night trying to keep warm in my 110 with the sleeping bag frozen to the window!, A family arrived and set up opposite my set up on the Friday and packed up Saturday morning mainly due to the wife not being happy at finding her contact lenses frozen in the solution when she woke up in the morning Shocked
The reason I'm going tomorrow? It's to meet up with friends from around the country, may make new ones(usually do whenever Land Rovers get together) and it's on my doorstep. Traveling distances are another big killer for these shows. I'm not doing Peterborough this year, £70 camping for the weekend after a 4hr trip after waiting for the boys to finish school on the Friday afternoon are not condusive to an enjoyable weekend to me with a twist off ramp as entertainment. I'm meeting up with a group instead, camp in a field, a day out at a local pay and play site as a guest and a good old chinwag round the fire at night. The cost of that is the diesel to get there, closer than Peterborough and a tenner for camping..........bit of a no-brainer. As for looking at LR bits, we're on the t'internet to read this, if you're really interested in a product then you'll go out and go to a seller to get a hands on view or you'll see someone else with it fitted to their motor.

WOW, that sure was chain-fed-rant Very Happy

I think that is why I enjoyed it today- I met a friend, made a couple of new ones (from the local club where I am moving to).

I think a better commentator with more knowledge and speaking skills would have been the one thing I would like to have changed today (and maybe turn the temp up 10 Degrees). It just spoilt an area that I normally enjoy. I am from a farming background and even as a kid used to go to the local shows and watch the machinery, animals etc in the centre ring and the guy ALWAYS knew exactly what was showing and all about it/ them. Was he clever or did he do his homework/crib sheets? either way it made it better.

Twist off ramp with a vehicle on it and then another 3 people either on/ around the ramp and vehiclke with the girl shouting over the mic- "go on you can go further, lets see what you can do". I don't think the driver was impressed as when the people moved back he just drove away without a interview.

I didn't mention it earlier, but Great standard of show vehicles Smile CT team in large numbers, millitary group with all extras Thumbs Up Good work from them.

Yep sorry about the length of the rant above Embarassed

It's getting to the end of the school holidays, ran out of spare money to keep the boys entertained and getting a little fed up of others using me for their "Get rich quick" schemes. I don't mind parting with my money for entertainment and days out as long as I feel it's value for money.

Two points from the thread strike me as fundemental:

1) the gathering concept is what drew me along yesterday and in this respect I think these events are really important

2) all the events (billing,p'boro etc) have the same set up and themes. It would be good to see someone taking a chance and changing the recipe so there are a few surprises

I probably have this rant every year but still attend at least one show to get my fix
