Sorry For Confusion.

The movement between the two would be very minor as it isn't lots of play, however there is alot of weight on it which is why it makes such a clunk.

The last one I stripped down the movement wasn't realy visable untill the hub had been stripped

Another thing to check is your drive flanges, if there is wear in the flange on the shaft could be making the clunk?

Portugal 1995 Defender 90 300 Tdi SW Alpine White
So today I took off the front wheels, disconnected the steering arms and measured the swivel preload.
Got a reading of a little over 4kg both sides, this with seals and CVs on.

Might I add that the flanges have no play.
On the other hand, I just found that the TRE on the end of the drag rod (the front steering rod) has some play

After some extra check ups I found that the steering column UJs have some play.
Might this be the source of the steering wheel "knocks" that I feel?
