The diesel V6 in the XF is the TDV6 used in RRS and Discovery 4, so a couple have been fitted. It will however be the Jag version, not the LR one, so stuff like oil pick up in the sump won't suit extreme angles. My Disco 'best bits'

Thanks guys. Not worried about oil pick up, not looking to extreme off road. What about the jag auto gear box, is that an easy fit?

It won't be cheap conversion and the main company simtek want abt 6k to make it run in your environment but I have heard of a lot of people with big problems using this solution also I doubt dry much you cold se the auto box with out spending huge money
Bas did this n a 2.7 tdv6 but used the manual 6 speed from a disco and had a plate made to make it fit the transfer case Steve 2015 2.2 tdci hardtop xs 3.2 conversion DONE 238bhp and 707nm torque and thats just the start ;-P hybrid turbo in build -done ready to fit ashcroft atb in transfer box 6 speed auto in build |

I've just seen that nemeoverland use the same engine in one of their conversions
They also fit auto boxes but for big money. I'm sure there must be a cheaper alternative? |

It can be done - I'm just starting a V6 engine conversion for a customer (but using a 6 speed manual box - rather than auto).
All the conversions I've seen so far use the Simtek ECU... I've experimented with the bodylogic system for a customer (in a very well know Off Road Race Car), and was far from impressed. To the point where I would not put my name to the work, so it got given back. It is a very basic alpha n system, and not designed to run a complicated modern diesel engine.... not properly and to an OEM standard. The system was shocking, and didn't even have proper fault detection, which lead to a dead turbo charger. For a man in his garage it might be passable, but no proper torque strategies, no proper cold start control, no proper boost control - the list goes on. The ECU is more suited at a basic petrol engine. Also, all the auto versions I've seen use the massively outdated and pointless 4 speed ZF auto.... 4 gears on an engine with such a capable torque and power band is useless. Everyone runs the gearbox and the engine on two completely separate ECUs - but then need to integrated together to give a smooth, controlled and safe drive. As mentioned by Disco Stu.... To do it properly I would run the Land Rover spec sump - it's a lot narrower, and would improve engine packaging (along with retaining its off road capability). To swap over isn't hard - all you need is the sump, pipe work and to clock one of the turbo's slightly (same turbo on both engines, but compressor is rotated slightly on the LR application (very easy to do - just needs a split pin changing). Also, you would not easily be able to use the Jaguar Gearbox - as the casing is different to the LR application. The Jaguar has a flange for the prop shaft - where-as you want the abilty to bolt an LT230 transfer box onto the back (so a LR box would be needed) - and I can supply a adaptor plate to do this. Then you just need a ECU solution and wiring - which is all very do-able But not that cheap. In short there are a couple of ECU's that can be used - one is a bosch motorsport ECU - but this is £££££££'s, the other is an open source/platform ECU, or the third is the option which I use... The nice thing is mine is it's an off the shelf ECU... i.e. no waiting months if you ever need a replacement - the ECU is not normally used for this application though (but conveniently can control V6 and V8 diesels). It will also work properly over CAN to control the TCM (transmission control module) and the instrument cluster on a Puma. Time just needs to be taken to set everything up properly. For example - don't think you can just run on a Disco 4 ECU calibration copied into the ECU - to get it driving correctly the engine will need a good few hours of dyno , rolling road and on road testing to get it performing correctly. A Defender weighs a tonne less than a Disco 4, so this needs to be taken into account (both Engine and gearbox calibrations will need setting up). Also, depending on what you are doing with the rest of the powertrain (axles, diffs etc) the calibration will have to torque limited at certain loads/speeds/in gear etc to stop blowing everything up. Wow, fantastically detailed response. Thanks
So jag auto box is useless. What's a rough cost for the set up you mentioned? |

Porny...Unreal knowledge there.
Geez, a bit different from the old days when ya'd just pull the old engine out, fabricate new engine mounts, maybe a bit of an exhaust, drop the new engine in...and ya're away....a lot different these days. Cheers, Pickles. |

Depending on specification - and what functions you wanted pricing would start from about £6500 + vat for the wiring loom, integration, ECU and all of the final calibration set up. Add to this the transfer box adaptor, cooling pack (intercooler + rad pack) and exhaust system... Your going to be up to about £10,000 + vat before fitting. And then a £1000 ish for a used Disco4 Gearbox. But for this you would have about 240bhp and 600Nm - matched to a 6 speed auto gearbox. And it would drive like an OEM conversion (so would be like driving a Disco 4/RRS). There are lots of options you can have - including paddle shift, stop/start button, a sport button option etc... and more power. But this will affect cost. Really with this much power you would need to look at brake and suspension upgrades.
Bordering on being a Geek lol.... (actually, think I have crossed that border). People don't realise how far technology has advanced - especially diesel technology.... More fantastic info thanks. Time to start looking in the piggy bank. Think I'll do it whilst converting a 130 into pick up too
