I'm looking for a decent trolley jack and a couple of axel stands. Is this a good deal or should I go for something better?

Think I would spend more and get better quality if it was me.

Halforda sometimes have their 4x4 trolley jack on offer, which is where I got mine. Some standard jacks might not lift high enough for purpose. Or get a Disco/Defender bottle jack?

I just found this...
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...yId_255207 Seems like a great deal BUT the jack and stands are rated at 2 tonnes. Is that enough for a 110?? Still, looks a great deal! |

Yes they are good enough, as will only be taking half the weight of the defender at any time.

By coincidence, I came to use my Halfords 2 tonne jack yesterday (the same one as in that set) and the damn seal failed, so it just pumped out hydraulic fluid. It's a few years old but has only had light use, so I'm a bit disappointed. By comparison, I also have a much older 1.5 tonne Halfords jack that is still perfect - it just doesn't lift as high. ISTR that one came with spare seals too, although I've no idea where they are now
I doubt I can get new seals, which is a real shame as it renders the whole jack useless, so I'll probably end up replacing it with THIS 2.5 TONNE ONE. I've got the Halfords one in LRA's post. The only negative is it didn't come with a carry case. I must try and find one somewhere.

I've got the Machine Mart 3tonne axel stands and they work fine. Saying that, I've only ever tried supporting one corner of my LR at a time.
How do folk here use their axel stands for simple tasks such as changing wheels etc? Do you lower the jack so the stands take the weight, or just have them there in case the jack fails? |

I have tried two of the 2 tonne trolley jacks from Machine Mart. First one went back and was exchanged. Second one I can not remember what happened to it but it was replaced by a 3 tonne trolley jack from Difflock made in Germany. Much superior to the Machine Mart ones.
Best to have two means of support rather then one. Brendan |

If I am doing a quick swap then up with Jack off with tyre and on with new one (like doing a flat at the road side) if its longer than that, up with jack, under with stand, down with jack onto the stand and wheel off. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I got Silverline 3 ton ratchet axle stands off Amazon, they are pretty much a generic axle stand that can be bought anywhere for around £15,I really like them, you can also get the same generic ratchet axle stands in Cost-co fer about £15.
As for a jack I use a 10 ton+ bottle jack ( freebie I found inna skip,oh happy dayz!)I'd previously bought a 4-5 ton bottle jack which I am happy with, but you NEED axle stands when using bottle jacks coz they are not as stable as trolley jack. If I get a trolley jack one of these is on mi list, they seem to get quite good reviews. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171028680739?ssP...1438.l2649 Or the more expensive generic aluminum "racing" trolley jack, google it. |

I'd recommend axle stands with a trolley jack too, as above, the seals can fail. I use axle stands and put a wheel underneath if I can, better safe than sorry. You don't want to be a candidate for the Darwin Awards... cheers simon PS: I got the jack and stands from Costco, from the reviews I checked they are solid and rated for 3 tonnes. Often stands are rated per pair too, so check the rating for a single stand |
