GoPro alternative from Nikon with GPS
this looks like a great competitor to the gopro plus it has GPS built in, waterproof, dust proof and freeze proof

I have it's predecessor the AW100 which isn't that much different spec wise

Great camera for what it is.

I use it in all sorts of conditions when out Mountain Biking and Kayaking. It's also been in the sea too.

Still photos are a good compromise, not as good as your usual good point and shoots but good considering the very small lens. It's not great in low light if you want high speed action.

Video is fantastic! It's not really a GoPro alternative (I have both) as you can't really mount it, but for tripod shots or panning shots, I love it.

For a sample of some stills, take a look here (they have been post edited, but you still get a good idea http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.3...amp;type=3

For video, take a look at

The dash camera and bike camera is the GoPro, the static shots are the AW100. Craig Rogers

cheers Craig,

you could also use some of the ram adaptors to mount the camera and the aw110 is about 1/2 price of a gopro hero 3

Just been having a look and the nikon looks like it sells in the £250 -£300 bracket which is about the same price as gopro 3 black can be had for (£270-80 on ebay at the moment) and does 4k video (4 x HD res) and comes with built in wireless and controller.

The gopro 3 silver can be had for under £200 and still does 1080p video.

(as you can tell I'm a gopro fan Smile )

I admit however that the gopro interface is a bit clunky and wouldn't recommend it for use as a 'normal' camera.

Yep, and I have done with great results. The only downside is high speed motion isn't captured as good with my AW100 (the newer one might be better!) and it only runs at 30fps at 1080. Of course, the biggest win for the GoPro is the lens angle. It's very wide so picks up a lot more than the Nikon.

But as you say, it's a lot cheaper (seen it for £230) than the GoPro and due to it being "thinner", you get less distortion. When my AW100 breaks, it will finally break as it does get abused, I will replace it with the AW110. Craig Rogers

On the (sort of) topic with GoPro, they've released the new Android/iPhone/Windows Phone App today that you can now review video and photos back on your device! The camera also needs a firmware upgrade. Craig Rogers

spotted that one, currently saving up for the DJI Phantom drone to hang the gopro off and then live stream back to the android table while flying Smile

Camelman,

Gopro bluetooth have a limited range (5-7 meters). So, in most of the cases the tablet lost the Gopro signal when the DJI Phantom are in flight (happens to me the first time Sad )

Cheers Eduardo

What I think is really neat about the Nikon is that it has GPS, so it will record the location of the photo. the gps receiver will reduce the battery life though

Eduardo,
I'm surprised your only getting 5-7 metres range out of the gopro. Is that from a hero3? I've been using it with the wireless remote from at least 100ft away (the gopro spec sheet says 600ft / 200m range).
Have the new app on the tablet now so will try it for range this weekend and let you know.

I've used my remote and Galaxy S3 from well over 100m away and works fine. Great for doing static Mountain Bike Shots that you can start the record before you start pedalling rather than start it ages before and record a lot of nothing.

Not sure how much better the GPS is on the AW110, but my AW100 isn't too good with the GPS turned on. Saying that batteries are pretty cheap and the bonus is an external charger so you can charge one whilst using another. Thumbs Up Craig Rogers

Strange indeed.

I have the Gopro Hero 3 Black edition
I lost connection with the camera at 10 meters or less with any device (Ipad, Samsung Galaxy or Android based tablet).
I also donwload yesterday the new firmware and the new APP. I will try again to see what happens and I will come back. Also the transmission have a big delay (1 -2 seg)

Cheers! Eduardo
