I've fitted an EGR blanking plate supplied BAS, this was part of an experiment to see what happened and the majority of guys who fitted the plate had a MIL light on the dash. The MIL light was a result of the intake pressure being out of range, sucking more fresh air (which is what we want) than recirculated air via the EGR.
I found that drilling a 15>20mm hole in the plate kept the ranges happy without the MIL light coming on, this isn't as good as a fully blanked EGR but is better than none. Rich PS there is another posting on here about this - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic358.html?highlight=egr |

Turbo uses the hot exhaust gases to drive a turbine (hence name turbo charger) which then drives a fan that blows air into the intake to be burnt with more fuel. Intercooler is there to chill the air to make the air more dense so allowing more fuel to be burnt.
EGR takes waste gases and then they are fed back into the engine to be mixed with fresh air and re-burnt to get rid of some of the nasties in the gases. I hope that makes sense - sort of 110 Hard top |

How would preventing the hot waste gasses being reburnt benefit the car. Would it mean that the combustion mixture is less diluted with waste gasses and therefore produce more power? Wouldn't this have an adverse effect on fuel economy? |

EGR is purely to reduce emmissions not for performance.
Also nice clean air is better than shoving unburnt hydro-carbons back into the engine And EGR valve will restrict airflow and the valve can coke up, even further restricting airflow. It is very common on TDIs and TD5s to not just to blank off the EGR (which just removes the unburnt gasses) but to fit a bypass, that removes the valve altogether and replaces it with a straight piece of tube. Puma engine has sensors that will sense the lack of, or wrong amount of exhaust gas recirculating to the intake.
Any incorrect value of gasses recirculating will fault the engine. So no full blanking plate like for TD5, but a holed plate allowing some gasses to go through or a reprogrammed ECU blocking the EGR and changing the sensor trigger values. <img> |

ER is a hippy piece of crap that has ruined diesel engines. Engine designers know that diesel needs cool dense air and a nice squirt of diesel. This gives a clean and smooth combustion and maximum power output and econamy.
Enter the hippy How about we reduce power and econamy by introducing hot air into the iduction ? Idiot engine marketers That is a brilliant idea ! Fools ! EGR is the devil. We upgrade our induction pipe work, our inter oilers and filter. And the last hurdle is a dose of hot oily air from the exhaust ! Its like making your dinner bigger by on the plate (best description I'vegiven yet lol) Do not get me starting on DPFs same hippy new crap idea Forgive my rant the wine is typing for me |

Peter at BAS have a remap that shuts the EGR and allows the motor to work with no lights on the dash coming on,
it also means no mechanical change to the engine - it also lets you revert to normal use if needed. Prony at IRB has a system that will remove the EGR and allow you to run the motor without any dash warning light on As I said, do a search on the site and see all the numerous posts on 'EGR removal' ..... From personal experience I can say its a big improvement. While I hate the political "hippy" correctness, the availability of Ford's (Transit) motors has kept the continuing production of Defenders running.
It would have cost too much for a new LR designed engine to replace the TD5 motor according to James Taylor's book. Lower emissions in the air are healthier to inhale. And LE Defenders can still go in LE zones, including other countries. However DPFs & the whole 2.2 thing for an obsolescent vehicle.. much less sense economically. Have any commercial fleets been replaced or supplied with 2.2s so far? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender |

Ford supplying engines in LRs is not a new thing, the TDV6 is a for unit.
The use of egr is to reduce burn temperatures in the combustion buy introducing burnt air which contains less oxygen. When the burn temps raise above 900 degrees approx the nox gases exhausted are much higher. All of the work done or bits added are to comply with emission regulations put upon manufacturers nowadays. |

I totally understand the idea of the egr and if it could've been achieved with a cleaner burn it would not be an issue
EGRs only active when cruising. When cruising you do not require maximum power or torque. Warm air burns more efonomacally and so is ideal for motorway. But it just doesn't seem to function right I know the guys at BAS and IRB have achieved some fantastic things from the moment I joined the forum I have followed there work. Problem is that in older engines like the 300 tri an EGR blank kit was a bolt on affair and I fitted hundreds. Yet nowadays we need to map them out . Roll in people with the machines and to.e to re write an ECU |
