Marking your vehicles - Sound advice from a victim of theft
I've taken the liberty of lifting the following extract from a post on LandyZone from somebody who had their Defender pinched then stripped and discovered parts from it on a truck on ebay less than 48 hours later. The theft of the vehicle in question was reported on here (LandyWatch) too. From what I recall, the remnants of the vehicle were discovered in an isolated area by a group that were geocaching and from some evidence gathered at the scene and a google search which threw up this forum (LandWatch), they were able to get in contact with the owner. The police made arrests as a consequence of the ebay and other evidence.

This is sound advise from a victim of the thieving scum......

Unfortunately the CPS claim that I cannot identify my bespoke interior or any of my other parts, despite most being fettled with as we do.
So it would also seem that they wont allow a prosecution for theft - despite my motor appearing in parts on ebay within 48hrs of theft.
The ONLY thing that can be done is possesion of my engine!!!!!!!! As it has a serial number on it.....as they do!

So folks. No matter what security you have etc. Datatag or security mark EVERYTHING on your pride and joy. Take a note of all serial numbers. Mark on reverse of trim/panels yr postcode and reg no. Etch all glass.........
Coz once the b'stards strip yr motor - it is damn near impossible to prove anything! Well according to the cps.
This theft was part of what was kicking off in the S.E. The police did a sterling job and have worked hard on this and the others. The cps however are a bunch of muppets. Meanwhile the scum know how to 'work rhe system' and are getting away with it.

Marking/etching kits out there from the likes of Datatag, Select DNA, Smart Water, Retainagroup/ISR. Etched glass or component marking with appropriate warning stickers may have some deterrent value too perhaps.

Even a UV pen marking the last seven digits of the VIN in hidden areas on plastic components isn't a bad shout. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

Good advice indeed. My Defender is fully marked up with ISG/Retaingroup UV markings on all glass and all body/major componenents.

If everyone marked up their Landrovers fully and then were diligent when buying s/h parts or vehicles to check for signs of markings or markings having been removed then we would have far less thefts in the first place. No market for stolen parts/vehicles = no thefts.

You have managed to get me worried now!

Any body know where I can get a kit of security bolts for the doors and bonnet?
All my searches so far have only come up with Allen bolts and not security type ones - I'm sure everyone is aware that a whole range of bolt lengths are needed for all the doors ( 5 door in my case) and the bonnet

Cheers

Just found Stigma Fastners http://www.a2stainless.co.uk/5-door-Defend...B25ZS.aspx
Which do torex kits.

Does anyone know what the bonnet hinges are made from ( steel?) if so could they be tapped to M10 and bolts put in from underneath?
