Wiper fitting Tdi/Td5
This only applies to the older push-on wipers fitted to pre-2002 Defenders, so guess this is the right place Wink

Can anyone with a Tdi or early Td5 confirm how the wiper spindle adapters fit onto the spindles themselves?

I'm in the process of replacing mine, but the superceded type appear to fit differently and I'm not convinced they are right Confused

My 90 was fitted with the adapters with a pinch bolt, which clamped onto the flat on the spindle, the replacements (STC987) have a grub screw and are profiled inside to fit over the spindle. However the ones I have only want to fit "upside down", with the grub screw acting on the round profiled part of the spindle.

With the arms and wipers back on, there's not enough clamping force available from the tiny grub screw to stop them moving on the spindle shaft, so my wipers are now looser than when I started Evil or Very Mad

Or is the inside profile is designed to match the spindle and I've got rubbish spindle adapters and they are just a shoddy fit when they shouldn't be?

Cheers chaps for any input Smile

That's what my old ones look like (with a bolt not a grub screw) - but thanks for taking the time to post a pic Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

See mine was the other way around IIRC. Had a grub screw before, but the replacement came with the bolt. An engine to TDi for!

Martin, lucky for you I have a 300tdi bulkhead in my garage with the wiper spindles fitted. Heres a quick snap shot, but if you want me to take any of it apart and photograph then let me know...

You star Bow down

What I like to know is how good a fit the adapter is to the spindle, and on which bit of the spindle the grub screw acts on? Mr. Green  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Ive just tried undoing the grub screw to remove the adapter but they are seized on!!! Ive soaked them in WD40 so Ill try again later, but.....

The adapter part (that is shaped like a top hat) slots onto the main stem. But this stem isn't perfectly circular, it has a flat side. And so does the hole in the adapter, so they locate onto each other perfectly. The grub screw I think (from memory) screws through the adapter and into a hole on the stem? Either that, or the grub screw protrudes through the adapter and sits under a lip on the stem?

If I can get the grub screws to undo then I'll take a photo.

Thanks for giving it a go Thumbs Up

I know about the flat on the spindle (see my first post), but thanks for confirming Smile

It looks like although this style of adapter is now "correct" instead of the style I had (due to supercession), the fitting isn't right as the grub screw should locate on a feature on the spindle which I simply don't have Rolling Eyes

Currently, as I don't have the hole/pit on the stem then the grub screw needs overtightening to stop the adapter slopping about Sad

I'm now trying to source OEM adapters to see if they are any better than these loose ones Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I could be wrong. perhaps the grub screw just tightens against the spindle, relying on friction? Which is why my wiper arms would sometimes fly off!!! Shocked

Although some google photos do seem to show a hole in the spindle for the grub screw to locate inside.

You are right - just found this that Simon has helpfully got listed on eBay - there's a pit on the stem:

Just seen your edit Thumbs Up

Done a load of searches on various forums and can't find anyone who's had this before when changing from the pinch bolt to grub screw type adapters Sad  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Seems a shame to have to mess about replacing the whole wiper spindle assembly as its a partial dash out job. Why not mark the very tip of your grub screw with white paint, screw down onto your spindle, remove, then drill a shallow hole where the mark is?

I was looking at the same ebay advert and was struggling to get that image posted on here.

To be honest Ive never come across the bolt type fixing before. I assumed they were all grub screws?

I think that's got to be the best idea, drilling the spindle in situ could be fun Laughing

Thank you very much for your help Bow down

Pinch bolts were on 90/110 before about 'G' reg, so I'm just before the changeover to grub screws.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
