Rock sliders - fixings good bad and ugly
New to the rocksliders thing and looking at a set for my 110.

It seems they are all fixed differently to the vehicle. Are some just glorified side steps and provide no additional protection? Some seem to need drilling and affixing properly? 1951 80" S1 2.0

There is a wide range of rock sliders, rock and tree sliders and side steps out there.

It all depends ow your requirements

Rock sliders are normally just rectangular tubes which replace the ali cills

Rock and tree sliders are normally a rock slider with a protruding round bar welded on. The tree sliders/nerf bar also double up as a step. However if you are vertically challenged this might be an issue as a step.

Steps are much lower and not as robust as rock and tree sliders. Being lower they do affect ground clearance.

Finish?

They come in a variety of finishes

Paint only

Powder coat only

Zinc electro plated/zinc wash etc

Hot dipped galvanised with or without paint/powder coating on top

If there is any chance of them being used as intended in my opinion then the hot dip galv is the best finish with or without powder coating. Scrape powder coating off against concrete bollard/rock/tree/wall and they will not rust.

Consider anti slip tape or maxi grip tread plates.

Chequer plate is extremely slippery when wet.

My 110 CSW came fitted with LR side steps and I was slightly concerned after reading the doom and gloom on here that it would hamper any offroad ability due to reduced clearance. After a fairly roboust offroad day in the north I can say that it must take some fairly steep steps/rocks to find this issue as my were unscathed and a few rock steps were climbed too.
So it may be that if your going with UK green lanes as its offroad use then rocksliders may be more a machismo badge of honour than an absolute must (instead of sidesteps of course as the std alloy sills will crumple if tapped) Smile 2023 110 P400e

I would like rock and tree sliders. Might not extreme offroad the thing but the amount of dents its picked up in car parks as some car doors are higher then the standard side steps.

Brendan,

I PM'd you about a set of SE galv and coated rock and tree ones earlier in the month but no reply with a price? I think they are the ones you have on yours when I checked it out last year? 1951 80" S1 2.0

Ouch, I do not like bumps Razz

Safari Equip R & T sliders hot dipped galv then powder coated for a 90 or a 5 door 110 are £240. Three door 110 is £10 extra. Carriage costs depends whereabouts in the UK but say £20.

If anyone want to collect from Halifax or one of the shows to save on carriage let me know.

I made some for a overlander 110 a couple of months back. To get the strength I made new rear body outrigers out of thicker stuff and longer to bolt straight up to the sliders, nice and strong with no movement even though it weighs closer to 4 ton than it should Mr. Green

PS mods this isnt spam as I dont sell them or want to

I've lost the link now but there was a company based around York that did some really robust ones. Their website had videos of they winching off them and dragging the vehicle along.

Just can't remember website or name of company Big Cry

This is how I mounted mine. Fronts are a simple front tag that lines up with the Bulkhead bolt. Rear is made to bolt to the end of a purpose made outrigger strengthener

The strengthener is made of 6mm steeel and fits over the outrigger and also forms the basis of a custom Body mount (the originals were so corroded I cut them out and started fresh!) and roll cage pick-up point
