hi,
can anyone recommend a top up / replacement oil for the transfer box from halfords? I presume its a case of topping up to the fill plug? |

For transfer box on a 2.4 Puma you need SAE 75W/90 GL-4/5
At Halfords its 9.99 for a litre http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...yId_255220 Same can be had here for less: - £20 for 5 litres at Euro car parts http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-acce...mp;cc5_868 Also try Oopie Oils You will need roughly 2.3 litres ( if replacing) |

The Halfords stuff should be fine to top up with. There are no issues with mixing GL4 and GL5

If topping up not much else you can do. Remember do not open the drain hole until you are sure you can open th e top up hole
The top up hole needs to be closed to 35Nm if you have a torque wrench Useful video here http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic15515....vice+video You will need something to pump the oil in - check video from about 4.40 mins in |

If you don't have a pump, find a suitable piece of hose long enough to reach from the TX box to up the side of the door, cut the bottom of a plastic bottle, tape on the hose, put hose in TX box........ etc, have a container ready (clean) to pop the hose in when TX box is full. thanks. having had a good luck I'm hopeful that the short hose that comes on the 1 ltr bottles will suffice??

As far as as I know, you don't fill it up to the hole, you need an exact amount ..

Top up the transfer box to the level of the filler plug. Main gearbox requires a specified amount. Steve.

thanks very much Steve.
right - I'm armed and dangerous. prop is out - got the oil, grease gun and brake cleaner..... 1 mug of tea and its business time !! check / clean handbrake drum. grease as many nipples as I can find. then re-instate followed by a top up on the transfer box (checking how much oil its lost in the last few months / 3k miles......?? (suspect another / call warranty claim might be in the making but lets wait and see). (thanks all). |

You'll probably find the actual level is a bit below the filler when you undo the plug, just stick your little finger in to check - but don't get it stuck as that might be embarrassing Steve.

I think I'll give the little finger thing a miss
assuming I can get the oil in I'm might be tempted to do a full oil change because I think the drain plug needs to come out as its leaking oil. assuming all is ok I suspect the best thing to do will be put some ptfe tape on it. ?? what do you reckon / or should it be a warranty call ?? thanks. |
