It's not libel if it's true ... 
Basically that vehicle is a ringer - no other word for it. Even if the chassis is 100% accurate for the 1985 model year (and it would have been modified to accept the TD5 engine) there are not enough original parts (drive train etc) to retain that registration and it would likely be on a Q plate. Some idiot will prob buy it but it may well get seized and scrapped.  John

Technically a 'Ringer' is a stolen vehicle with it's identity changed to that of a different vehicle.
This is not the same as a vehicle rebuilt with new/second hand parts. Yes, this vehicle may not comply with VOSA regs and may need a to be checked before being allowed or not allowed to retain its original identity, but that does not make it a ringer.... Not saying what these types of dealers are doing is right - just saying the term 'ringer' should be used carefully as it does imply accusations of a criminal activity of a different type to mis-selling/not following correct VOSA regs. Spoke to a customer of mine in the US today and he says it isn't uncommon for 90/110s to fetch $100k plus over there. So i can understand why the pre 85/86 ID is so important and why sellers push the "suitable for import to the US". He told me of one guy (says there are loads at it!) who made a living buying brand new pumas in LHD spec, putting them on pre 85 id and importing them
Needless to say the guy is no longer trading (and also getting free bed and breakfast for a while no doubt) and the US plod are also looking into the european company that sold the cars 
The car in this advert may well be completely legit and above board, and if so it will no doubt come with a pile of paperwork and receipts for all the parts to help the new owner prove the case if needed. But they would still have a hell of a job holding on to the 85 ID with all the TD5(98 on) components (engine,gearbox,chassis,body,etc) if it ever gets dragged for a VIC check (which is very likely for an 1985 car that looks this tidy)
We spend quite a lot of time with a couple of our local police showing them what to look for on landrovers to determine the age/spec of the car (believe me there are a LOT of differences! ). Just looking at a bare factory chassis, we can determine to an accuracy of about 18month-2 years when the chassis/car was built. And if in doubt, newer cars also have date stamps in many locations(inc. inside the chassis!)
Hopefully this will help cut down on the thefts (especially around our area  which seems to be the landrover theft capital of britain at the mo!)
